what is a coaxial output typically made for???

on my tascam interface there is a coax in and out .. just one each .. what could these be used for?

Coax digital? Well you could go to a reverb/multi-effect processor digitally and come back in digitally, or some preamps have digital outs, like the tampa, ART digital MPA, and some much more pricey like from API.

That's a S/PDIF (Sony/Phillips Digtal InterFace). It's a digital Stereo Gozinta/Gozouta. You use 75 ohm video type patch cables terminated with RCA connectors. Do NOT use the RCA patch cables that you'd connect up stereo gear with. Wrong cable. It's used to connect to outboard gear that has like digital connections.
