    a vox recording tecnique

I always mute the vocal track, I hate to hear myself during a take. Good advice! When I am doing harmonies I solo the lead vocal and sing acapella. It really makes hamony much easier without all the inst. Maybe some quiet guitar to keep you on track, but I listen for the breath on a rough take.

How do you get that Distorted vocal sound like The Strokes do

take the high pass and low pass down to nothing on an eq and you'll get an am radio kind of sound. On the way to the sound you want. Also, that guy uses too much of that distortion crap on his vocals - sorry just a blurb

    vox hard panned

I'm with mastering house. Most likely you are hearing doubled vocals and panned a bit with a sprinkle of delay. Vocal "meat" as I have come to know it

    Elixir strings: Polyweb or Nanoweb?

I have played on Elixer strings only for about five years now. I play them on everything I have including my mandolin. Best strings ever! The first set of nanos I bought was for my Acoustic / Taylor. I play on 13 to 56 guage which is pretty heavy. I broke the high E string putting them on (a...

Help getting the guitar sounding "right"

Using what you have now... You will need to EQ the guitar after it has been recorded. Find a way to EQ and you'll be on the right track. Now a little about quality... Without a mic and a great sounding amp, you will not get the sounds you desire. Running a little amp with a pedal will not...

kick in the chest evading me!

What are you recording / mixing with? If you have the ability to solo the kick and use eq then do that. Giles is saying that hearing and working with the kick alone will help you find your sound. And make sure you have a good kick mic. Are you recording the kick or using samples? I am still not...

    The compression question

Ok, I that makes sense. But I am not going to master my record and I just want a bit more volume out of it. If you want to crank it, I want you to crank it! So would it distort the sound if I boosted the WAV file in another program. What is a good program to use?

    CD Problems

You should search other posts about this topic. This is the first question I asked when I joined this forum. I learned quickly that this has been discussed a few times. I will say that you loose about 8db of volume by the time you get it to cd. You will just have to live with it unless you plan...

    The compression question

At this point I have definately learned not to compress the stereo bus! What is a good way to compress in post? Is it just as bad to compress the wav file in a seperate program, like cool edit?

    Making a CD

Well that's the hitch, you must burn in 16bit and you will loose some quality. I use a 4 band eq on the master fader and pump the highs a little bit. It seems to take some of that low grumble out and put back the punchiness you loose in the bounce. As far as one seemless track, you've got me...

    Enviroment Important?

I got to looking around my studio (should be called small space dedicated for recording) and I realized how much stuff I had decorated with to create a mellow enviroment. Sometimes I'll get in there with the lights down and the candles going. Other times I'll have the lights blaring and have...
