At this point I have definately learned not to compress the stereo bus!

What is a good way to compress in post? Is it just as bad to compress the wav file in a seperate program, like cool edit?

I'm going to sound cryptic again...

Compression during mastering takes place wherever and whenever you think sounds best.

If you've got Cool Edit or a Distressor or a Vari-Mu, where, when and how much compression is applied is totally your choice, and is dictated by your judgement and availability of gear.

I'll add that compression of the stereo bus is not neccessarily a bad thing if the mix needs it. They key is not to compress (or do anything to) the mix for the sake of volume alone.

Ok, I that makes sense.

But I am not going to master my record and I just want a bit more volume out of it. If you want to crank it, I want you to crank it!

So would it distort the sound if I boosted the WAV file in another program. What is a good program to use?
