How much money do you have invested in your studio?

Uh... Yeah... Thats bad. My personal equiptment come to $5304 including cables, stands, computer, screen, speakers, amp, microphones, and interface. Though I have daily access to a studio equipted with just about $500,000 not including room treatment and actual building. My car... Eh, what...

    Possible purchase tomorrow...

The first set of strings (before any vox) there was origionally only cello, even after overdubs, but I coppied the two violins from another section of the song. And in the end where the violin comes in alone and the cello follows, the violin, again was coppied from another part of the song...

    Possible purchase tomorrow...

Nope cello was live with Acoustic Guitar and Vocals. The two violin parts were over dubbed afterwards. Though... Which parts sound sampled because some parts sort of are... Oh dear...

    Possible purchase tomorrow...

Onyx sounds pretty dam(n) good. Albeit not the best but good. If you want to know how the tracks stack, I am providing a link to an mp3 of a track I did that was mostly live. (violins overdubed) The Onyx 16 preamp board was used direct out to an ADAT 24HD mixed ITB in Pro Tools LE 7.0 with...

    mackie onyx VS. Focusrite OctoPre

What we need is a listening sessions, or the like, shoot out of the Digimax, Onyx 800r, Focusrite Octopre, and the M-Audio Octane. Then we wouldn't need these thread, although they would pop up anyway! :D

    Tom Mics (200 budget)

Don't fool yourself, just because D112s are generally used on Kicks, doesn't mean that is thier only use. ;) I've heard some nice sounding toms comming from D112s, not only my own recordings, but I actually picked up the idea from a recording/mixing engineer from New York. He used them on...

    mackie onyx VS. Focusrite OctoPre

I'd go with the onyx, though as with the other, I can't directly compare the two pres. Though I do have a mbox, which are focusrite and don't like those pres one bit. On the other hand we use the onyx 16 channel mixer for our mobil rig along with a Alesis HD24 and find the quality to be more...

    Tom Mics (200 budget)

Wait 200 each mic? D112. 200 Total? Sorry not much else but the 57. I was teaching someone today about mic choice, and when they wanted to use a 57 on snare, when 441's were laying around, I grabbed the mic out of his hand and said "this is what you use a 57 for" and continued to hit a nail in...

    So what? opinions please!

I agree with the comment about the lack in bass. Maybe its just me but I'd like a little more room sound. Either a nice sounding reverb would be good, though just a touch, or stick a mic when you are tracking in the next room to get a delay and some natural reverb. Who knows, plus you don't have...

    Millennia TD-1

Yes, there is. They both take the mic signal and add gain. Thats where contrast comes in.

    Cardioid or Hypercardioid for voiceovers?

It actually depends, If you are doing ADR work you want to use a mic closest to the one used on set. This would usually be a shotgun mic which is either super or hyper cardinoid. Otherwise if you are not matching something prior done, then whatever sounds good is good.

    What about snare drums?

Use both they will each have a different sound! :D Seriously find out which one sounds better for the song and use it. Or just stick with the one that you like for all of your songs, but at least do some testing.

    system upgrade.

Upgrade to pro tools 7 so that you can use dual core and then purchase a nice outboard light pipe converter to go with your digi 002 like an apogee or mytek or the like. Then you have a couple thousand left for some nice pres. ;)

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

If you are going to be recording in a house, and you have the luxoury of a somewhat mobile recording set-up, i.e. computer, then walk around the house and find the best sounding room with some nice natural reverb in it and record there. Try as hard as possible not to record vocals in a completly...
