What about snare drums?

I have two snares, one piccalo and a standard 14x6 steel snare. The piccalo is I believe a maple 13x3.5 inch in very good condition. What snare drum would you guys prefer on using to record?

just an ordinary 01' Pearl Export Snare 5.5x14 tuned tight on the batter and medium on the reso with Reverb and Low decay time. for that Abe Cunningham(Deftones) Snare sound

I'd go with the 14x6 steel snare (I'm assuming you wanted a choice between the two you listed) You'll get a bit beefier of a snare sound.

Use both they will each have a different sound!

Seriously find out which one sounds better for the song and use it. Or just stick with the one that you like for all of your songs, but at least do some testing.

It's all about the tunings. Tune that piccolo (sp?) down a bit & let it ring, tune it high & get a nice crack. Do the same with your other. Juggernaut is right, try them both & see which one fits the song or the overall sound that you're looking for.

One thing not mentioned, is a lot of drummers believe that the snare is one of the few things that allows them to stand out. It's a very personal sound. I'd start with "your sound" first, and see where that takes you. If it's no good for recording, fix it from your starting point.

for myself i use an all maple 14x8. the deeper the better!!
