    vocal booth done!

The vocal booth is sheet rocked inside and out. Whew. Once 4'x3'7" area on the back ceiling, and behind the big radiator, thats it! Those of you who have to sheet rock behind radiators, instead of taking them out, shoot screws through the coils of the radiator with an extension in your screw...

    radiator + sheetrock = fire?

I'm thinking I shouldn't be worried, but I wanted to ask. Hot water radiators, not steam, have water running through at boiler temperature. Now that my studio is in parallel to the house from a plumbing perspective, I'm getting close to 180 degree water flowing through the cast iron radiators...

    Spackle on wood

I have a couple of edges, in this very low cove, where I didn't rip out all the cedar paneling, because its in nice shape and I kept hitting my head in there (the high point is 27", the low point is 8"). Anyway, I was clever when I installed the plywood, I pulled out one board a little bit...

    Midimonkey - almost there

My end-year goal of physical construction being complete might actually be a reality. I have one small piece of plywood to screw down in the vocal booth, then cover it with sheet rock, then tape and mud. There is a lot of sheetrock and mudding to do, but all the really hard parts (like the...

    Knightfly, Pucks, and Point Loads

Steve, I couldn't find our original thread, wasn't sure if it was on this BBS, or John's, or what thread. Maybe I have too much "mud" dust in my head :( Anyway, I've attached the diagram as promised, and I'm only trying to illustrate a concept here. This concept is "big" in racing, because...

    Spackling Sucks

Just in case any of you were not aware.... Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks! Spackling sucks...

    Midimonkey Sheetrocking Photos

I only got three pictures, but nothing too exciting here except sheetrocking the cove was probably the nastiest thing thats had to be done so far. No angles there are "true", 27.5 degrees here, 17 degrees there, the short piece of "horizontal" ceiling is at a 4 degree slant, so it all had to be...

    Midimonkey Producer Desk/Racks

Since the room is small (13ish x 20ish) minus the 6x8' vocal booth, I decided early on to slap the producer's desk against the vocal booth. Essentially, its a slew of racks with a counter top, that I'm "calling" a producer's desk just to be like the cool guys here :) So the first picture is...

    Cable management suggestions

Mount this horizontally behind your console between the table and the wall: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3060262273&category=20316 Mount this in your racks, on front for cables that hook to the front of gear, or at the back of the rack behind shorter units...

    Midimonkey Webcam

http://midimonkey.dyndns.org:81/ username: guest password: guest (all lower case) Up comes a menu, "active-x" worked for me, the "java" button bombed, though that might be my browser settings. Don't expect to see too much... junk everywhere. I have the camera sitting on a pile of junk under...

    Things NOT to do...

Studio construction can be entertaining, fun, and a moving experience. I've decided to share some tips, for those who are like me - extremely clumsy. 1. Do not use a circular saw to cut through other tool cords. My electric drill is on its second cord :( 2. Do not use a piano stool as a...

    Carpenter Ants

As some of you know, I had carpenter ants, carpenter bees, and field mice roaming through the crawl space and above the ceilings in my studio. Thus, I tore it all out! Then, I had it treated for carpenter ants, carpenter bees, and field mice. Nasty poison everywhere, bombs, powders, liquids...

    Smpte Wall Display

For a long time now, I've wanted a SMPTE display for the wall. Something with large digits, that I can see without squinting. Maybe, 3-4" tall LED's. I have an RS422 port on my akai "master" recorder I won't be using anymore, since I've successfully tested akainet for recorder syncronization...

    Ground Loops Explained

A picture is worth 1000 words :-D NEVER lift grounds off AC cords, its dangerous to you and your equipment. Another neat trick is to make a patch cord with a small resistor in series with the shielding, and the ground leg on the 1/4" phone jack. You'd have to experiment with the value, but...

    Soffit Mounted Subs

Having a short wall on my studio, near where my console table is going to go, I was looking at it earlier while waiting for a home depot truck, that it would be very easy to build a subwoofer enclosure right in the wall, and have the woofer mounted facing forward, much like a soffit type...

    The Mess II

Today was enjoyable, took "the next step". I discovered that Home Depot not only rents trucks, they also deliver for about $50. So, taking advantage of this option I purchased 40 pieces of 4x8x.75" plywood, 20 bundles of R19 insulation, and about $350 worth of electrical stuff (switches...

    Akai DL1500

The E-Bay gods were kind today. Received an Akai DL1500, for those who aren't familiar with the unit its the fancy remote normally used with DD1000, DD1500 digital dubbers (post production stuff). Anyway, some web links have indicated that this remote will work with the Akai DR-16/DR8...

    Studer Pricing (?)

A good friend of mine in CT recently decided to dump his pair of MX2424's and re-become an analog purist/bigot, and made me an offer on my pair of Studer A80-24's I have in storage. I have the remotes, the Studer sync box, and two wooden racks containing 2 power strips and 24 DBX266's each...
