RTA Software for measuring room acoustics

Hello, I'll be moving into a new house with my first recording/studio space. I've already got a Dayton reference mic and true RTA software. I've seen in some books RTAs which show waterfall plots for freq. over time over level. I do not believe trueRTA has this feature but I'd like to measure...

    M/S processing vs. M/S recording

Wow, what a great reply. Thank you for this information.

    M/S processing vs. M/S recording

Hello, I am reading a book now which describes a M/S mic technique which uses a cardiod dynamic mic (on-axis) and a figure 8 mic (sideways 90°/270°). I am also familiar with plugins which have M/S processing. Therefore I am slightly confused. 1) does a M/S mic setup require additional M/S...

    Laptop recommendations?

I'm a huge Thinkpad fan. Built to last. High quality components. Keep in mind the computer prices are high right now due to component shortages and supply chain issues.

    Re-Amp with DI

    Good to know, thanks!

    Re-Amp with DI

Also need to include impedance matching, which is arguably the most critical signal parameter in this situation. Also I do not intend to use an amp here. Just want to loop through some stomp boxes and back into DAW.

    Re-Amp with DI

Hello, I was reading that re-amping using a standard DI box (in reverse) is not a good idea because the signal level coming from the audio interface output would be too hot (level too high) for the DI box. I have a Warm Audio active DI which has a -30dB PAD. Would this device work for...

MIDI Playback Latency + Tracking Audio

Hello, I believe I am fighting some latency issues while recording on top of my midi drums. For example, I arm my guitar track to record and I am playing along to the already recorded midi track (not bounced to audio). When I am done recording and listening back my guitar track is no longer...

Monitoring Latency - Impact on MIDI note timing

Update - was able to bring my latency into check. I didn't realize StudioOne has an extra layer of settings called low latency mode. I do have to bring my buffer size down from 256 to 128 to get into the acceptable range. But this shouldn't be an issue, hopefully.

Monitoring Latency - Impact on MIDI note timing

Lol, yes I am a worrier and about to start a new project with a new DAW and just trying to account for everything up front. The default buffer settings have relatively large latency. How low would one usually run the buffer down to in order to bring latency into check?

Monitoring Latency - Impact on MIDI note timing

Thank you. To be clear I don't have an issue it is just something I've been thinking about. Here is what I'm using. I have not tried yet but I am fairly certain I will be able to get sub 10ms latency with my Tascam 208i buffer setting. StudioOne - version 5 Tascam 208i interface Computer...

Monitoring Latency - Impact on MIDI note timing

**Assuming quantization is turned off This will seem like a bizarre question and I'm not sure I know how to really describe what I've got in my head. When I am recording MIDI I have to use the "processed" sounds for monitoring as there is no real input to monitor with 0 latency. If I am...

    Recording Live Drums

Interesting, the first thought I had was to filter the noise but I have never done this before. I will look into this further.

    Recording Live Drums

I may be wrong. However 3/4 mic's.... my issue remains the same. Just wondering how to handle drum transient WHILE keeping a good recording level without clipping.

can hear previous recording on the new take - Tascam688

I could be way off but it sounds like you have some sort of monitoring setting which is allowing the playback sounds to be re-recorded along with the new audio. Does the device have any sort of monitoring controls? Or maybe the device has some overdub controls which need to be set differently?

    Recording Live Drums

I am working on a project with a drummer and we are recording drums + guitar "in the room". The drum kit is mic'ed with 3 mics (Glyn John method.) We used an SM57 on top. PGA56 for the side. And a beta 52A for the kick. My issue is the transient on the top/side mic. When I set the input gain so...

Completely Frustrated w/ Studio One 5

That is definitely some solid advice on perspective. For sure the learning curve and workflow will not feel "comfortable" right out of the gate. I guess the biggest turn off has been the bugs. Somehow S1 -5 crashed my new interface and it had to be power cycled in order to bring the audio back...

Completely Frustrated w/ Studio One 5

I just swapped over from the latest version of ProTools to Studio One 5 and I am starting to think I made a huge mistake. My reason for swapping was to ditch the ilok and monthly license fee. My biggest gripe is that Studio One 5 has more bugs than I have ever seen in a DAW. And second is the...

Sweetwater Interface comparison - Under $500

That is a great point. I did not even consider the technical limitations of the USB power compounding with each additional mic pre.

    What DAW are you using?

I just swapped over to Studio One 5 Pro because I could not stomach the monthly Pro Tools licensing any longer. I only spend maybe 100 hours a year inside of a DAW but hoping to step that up. Studio One 5 Pro is about the same cost as a year of PT but if I use it for longer than a year it will...
