Bare wood vs finished wood ?

this may be a silly question, but is there any sonic difference between bare wood, like rough sawn pine that's unfinished versus the same wood with a poly finish on it? I'm trying to decide if I want to take the effort to finish the walls of my future music room / recording space.

    Isolation room

the second floor (1st floor to the overseas folks) of my old house was like a trampoline. The house was built in 1962, you would think it would have been a little more solid but they were probably already starting to build to maximize profit over durability even then. Couldn't have a turntable...

    Isolation room

I should have guessed drums from the screen name. D'oh !! good point about the hangers, newer construction is often about meeting bare minimums

    Isolation room

what is your intention for the room, practice, rehearsal, jamming, recording, mixing/mastering? I'm assuming electric guitars. How close are the neighbors? Assuming single family house. What is the current size and layout? Do you currently have complaints from the neighbors? Not to be the...

How to control DAW from a drum room

that's kind of the same thing with having my music room down cellar. At my old house, it was upstairs opposite my bedroom. At my apartment it was my bedroom. I wanted it to be here in the office next to my bedroom but it's even smaller than the room I had at the old house. Both rooms are...

How to control DAW from a drum room

@dkerwood your setup sounds very close to mine. My office/music room is next to the basement stairs, the future music room is just off the left of the stairs. I've wondered about keeping the computer upstairs and operating it remotely. Recording the music is only part of the battle, I'm not...

Looks like it will be a while until NSSD (New Studio Space Day) thread

Update - Still recuperating from the various infirmaries and making improvements. Finally got a tester/circuit breaker tracer kit. I've found exactly 2, yes, two receptacles in the entire house that are wired and grounded properly. One in the living room on the main floor of the house and...

Egg boxes - no, not a joke.

surely somebody has done that already. However, in the unlikely event it has not, I'll gladly accept a grant for, say 300,000 USD to build a proper studio and use egg cartons and test it thoroughly for a white paper. Now, where do I apply?

Egg boxes - no, not a joke.

at this point, I'll try anything if it doesn't cost more money :D Just bought eggs yesterday. but I think they were in a foam box. There were cardboard boxes, though. Given that it might be a year plus until actual construction of the room takes place, I've got some time to build up a supply.

Thoughts on mains panel location and interference

I don't know if this house has a smart meter. I remember the electric company making a big push to make them ubiquitous. I don't know if we have the option of deleting a smart meter. Now that I think about it, where I was sitting in the living room playing my guitars that day was on the other...

Thoughts on mains panel location and interference

I have a receptacle tester and circuit breaker finder en route. Small step but first identify the issues, be prepared for the electrician.

Thoughts on mains panel location and interference

mostly i was concerned about electrical interference from the mains panel if it was in close proximity to my music room, but it sounds like as long as everything is properly wired, it may not be an issue. I may have more of an issue with some high tension lines on the far side of the park...

Thoughts on mains panel location and interference

I was just informed that a licensed electrician would be not allowed to break out the music room's circuit on a separate ground. Code here in US says all grounds and neutrals must be common at the entrance point vis a vis the mains panel.

Thoughts on mains panel location and interference

When we get an electrician in here, I've been giving thoughts to trying to isolate the music room's electrical circuit from the rest of the house. We are going to have to essentially orphan and rewire the whole house anyway. However, the mains panel will be in the area of the music room. The...

Looks like it will be a while until NSSD (New Studio Space Day) thread

I hope it doesn't take 27 years. But, the electrical system in this house is beyond atrocious. We knew that going in, it was part of the negotiation. But it was just a bare bones, fix the naked wires, uncovered junction boxes, duct taped splices, etc. When I get to meet the electrician, I'm...

Looks like it will be a while until NSSD (New Studio Space Day) thread

we've been in the new house now for just over 2 weeks. I've been doing ~90+% of the moving single-handedly, my brother is super swamped with work (which enables us to buy and pay for the house.) I'm getting too old for this stuff. Both knees, both wrists and my back are knackered. I managed...

Tiles from drop ceiling, any use for acoustic treatment?

one room in the basement of the house has a drop ceiling (don't know what they call it over the pond) that has those fibrous tiles. I plan to take the ceiling down and wonder if it is worth retaining the tiles in case they might be useful in building gobos or wall treatment. Even if they're...

    I'm getting a music room/recording space again !!1! Woot !!

I'll have a bedroom that I can use as a dedicated music room. After I get done with the demolition of the basement's existing appointments, I'll be left with concrete walls with 2x4 stud framing 16" on center. Would the studs help for diffusion if I set up down in the basement? I'm not going...

Bouncing mixes to USB stick, truncated/punctuated results

I do the 'save as' thing, name my file and put it in a folder. But i use the 'Bnc' (bounce) button in Logic to send it to the USB stick. Maybe that's the problem? Didn't seem to affect the shorter stuff I record direct. These longer files are from video I shot on my phone and saved to my...
