Wassup!
It’s been a moment. Hope you remember me :)

Been hanging with a drummer friend lately; like me, he’s a Steely Dan superfan, and we enjoy a lot of similar music. I brought my gear over for a quick set-up and I recorded him. This is a very rudimentary setup and mix (I listened to the stems beforehand on my mixing headphones but we ended up mixing on a Bose bookshelf system!!).

2x overheads (SM81)
1x snare top (Shure 545D knockoff)
1x kick (Audix D6 knockoff)

No room treatment. Processed in Harrison Mixbus; tape and a bit of room emulation from IK Multimedia.

Pic attached just to get an idea of set-up... floor tom mic not used in mix, and obviously the snare and hats are not in playable positions lol.

Thoughts?

Pretty Good Stuff - aside from the snare mic it’s a variation on the Glyn Johns setup.
Could you get anymore gain on the mics?

I used a Zoom H6 for recording and it’s hard to judge gain... brought it into Mixbus and I was boosting gain there by up to 20db (maximum it will allow)... I do intend to get to the bottom of this. Was it noticeable in any way?
EDIT: Mixbus also normalizes automatically when “quick exporting”.

Being a newbie I can't comment on the sound ( which seems good to me ) but I will say after the first 10 seconds I was locked into that groove and not even paying attention to the sound !!! Great playing right there !!!

He is a great player, will pass it along :)

Just to weigh back in. My son in Texas and I record stuff from afar all the time. Pint being he has a minimal (Behringer 1820, a 57 on snare, a D-112 in the kick and two Audio Technica condensers that I can't recall and his stuff he sends me is solid.
