HOW TO RELIEVE GAS?

Anybody know why "Gold Tops" are gold?
Donald Trump designed it. He likes gold :D

Seriously, I don’t know exactly why gold was picked as a color choice. But it would show up well on black and white TV. Along the lines of Fender’s butterscotch finish on Tele’s. And later Gibson’s “TV” yellow.

But it is my understanding that paint was used to hide the maple cap from Gibson’s main competitor, Fender.

That looks copper. The lighting?

Mine.
Lighting will have a HUGE effect on the appearance, as will the viewing angle. And, where you get your gold paint makes a huge difference.

I had to match quite a few "gold" inks over the years. There are a bunch of different grades of metallic pigment, and each has it's own shade and sparkle (leafing) characteristics. Pantone 872C was a very popular shade with a lot of advertisers when they wanted a true gold appearance which is actually based on bronze powder. And, I can say with authority that the stuff is a mess to work with. Even in paste form, it spreads like wildfire. Powdered bronze is even worse.

One problem with matching the tone of the original gold tops, is that a) the color will change over the years between the NC lacquer degradation, and the pigment oxidation. b) the companies that make the pigments have all changed over the past 50 years. Companies will drop grades, and change processes, which affects the look.
