Recording issues

Hi guys,
I'm trying to record using an sm58 with an Alto mixer (Truemix800fx). Unfortunately, after doing all required connections using the USB cable with the mixer, no sound is recorded. No waves are shown on the Audacity app. I used 3 different apps including Jetaudio, wavepad, better audio editor and a Windows recorder but no waves on or sound recorded. I even used the red and white pins for the output but no results still.
i need help please
 
Hello Mak,

It is tough to troubleshoot your issue. I would guess it could be that you haven't installed the ASIO driver software for the Alto, or haven't selected it in whatever DAW you are using.

Oh shit, it looks like this unit uses the built in Windows audio drivers. That in itself is a bad start for you.

But all is not lost. You need to figure out in Audacity or whatever where to make the connection to the Alto.

Whether it is worthy, is not possible to know until you get it working.

Morning Mak, First thing is to ensure the LED meters on the mixer are indicating a signal and that you get the mic in headphones plugged into the mixer.
I am about to get my brekky but will be back soon.

I'm bek! Attached is a screen shot of Audacity with a Citronics USB mic connected to this Lenovo laptop. I don't have a USB mixer any more but the principles are all the same for any "generic USB Audio device" (muktitrack USB interfaces with ASIO drivers do diff')

Note, on the top left "Windows Direct Sound" is the driver and next is the name of the device but that could be anything! Your mixer might show up as a "USB Microphone" or just "generic audio device". There is an input gain slider, pretty unique to Audacity, make sure it is initially set all the way right 100%, adjust when sorted.

Assuming the above is set OK you need to open a new session and click on the meters to show modulation. You need to get a signal averaging around -18(dBFS).

If you still cannot get signals into Audacity there must be a setting on the mixer you have not understood. I have downloaded the manual for that mixer so if you are still stuck come back.

My first question would be do you have the Alto Truemix selected as the recording device in Windows? Under Settings - Sound - Input Devices, you can have different devices for playback and recording. If you are using the Windows Sound Devices driver, then you need to choose it there, then select it in Audacity or other recording software.

Fair point Rich. I would have gone there had the OP come back and said Audacity cannot find the mixer. Also, in my experience Win 10 at least defaults to a generic audio device such as a USB mic or the USB A/D,D/A dongle I use with a headset for Skype. Much of the time this laptop is running with MOTU ASIO drivers for an M4 but if I swap that for either of the other two devices I do not need to change anything in Win Sounds.

I have looked at the manual for that Alto mixer and found it is a basic stereo 16 bit 44.1/48kHz device. These can suffer an annoying "whine" on playback. There are ways to significantly reduce that so I hope our new friend comes back soon and tells us how he is doing?
