So my 14 year old son and I have been recording some of his favorite songs. We call it The Covid Sessions.

Anyway I find doing this has helped both my recording and mixing skills since i can reference the original to help me along although using a limiter still confuses me.

Lessons learned- Turn it down, not up, cut before boost,

Its not perfect but we had fun. My room stinks so any advice on small improvements are appreciated.

Ignore the late snare hit coming out of the bridge...Im too lazy to edit!

I like this. The drums sounded a bit muffled at first but seemed to blend in ok with the music as it progressed. I think the vocal could come up a bit in the quieter verses. I tend to like music that explodes like this.

Yea the drums are intentionally fucked up on the first verse kinda like the original recording.

Nice job! It's really great that you're able to share this with your son. Is that him singing lead?

OK. Overall this is a nice attempt. Drums need work. When the heavy guitars kick in, just a little too upfront. Timing on the guitar picking is just slightly off, not quite clean enough but that's just practice, better than I could do by a long shot! Watch your high end on the cymbals. Getting almost to the wince point. Nice piece.

I turned down the OH mics twice before this copy and thought maybe they could come down a little more or roll off some high end.

Ill keep it in mind on the next one.

Sounds good man - son's vocal is a very good approximation of Tom Delonge! I think the cymbals are peaking in the choruses, and you know about the slight timing issues with drums, but overall great!

Thanks for the input! I have messed with the OH's but my room stinks, by the time I hear a real difference Ive killed them completely....still learning!!

The verses could use some work but the chorus is excellent. Really good job and great vocals there.
Drums sound phasey but that could be Spundcloud...
