Record a small tube head through my Line 6 UX1

Hi

I am about to buy a small tube head + cabinet to play at home (Randall Diavlo RD1H). It has a dummy load to connect to interfaces and record yourself in the computer, but I am a bit confused about how to connect it to my Line 6 UX1.

The Line 6 UX1 has three connections in the front: a XLR Mic, a Jack for the instrument, and a Jack for Headphones. The Randall RD1H has a XLR out speaker simulator. Do I need to buy a XLR-XLR cable, and connect it from the out of the amp, to the Mic XLR of the UX1? Or should I buy a XLR - Jack, so I connect it to the Instrument input of the UX1?

I am a bit lost with all this, and I cannot find any answer anywhere.

XLR-XLR. Keep the input gain/volume on the UX1 down low when you turn it on, then gradually increase the volume.

Better would be to put a mic in front of the cabinet speaker.
 
Grrr! The Randall manual does not give the output level of the XLR* socket. They do however say it can feed a power amplifier so we can assume somewhere between -10dBV (300mV) and +4dBu (abt a volt).

The former figure would be hot for a mic input but probably "safe". The latter would almost certainly cause cracking, unpleasant overload but there is no harm in trying.

I really do wish gitamp mnfcts would give XLR outputs MIC levels and floating, transformer outs, not as tho' suitable traffs are that expensive!

Yes, I know some top level "pro" gear uses XLRs at line level but most stuff these days don't. You see "XLR", you think "mic" level.

will serve. They do not have the top (mechanical) quality "Neutrik" connectors but are easily good enough for light home duty.

If you were prancing about on a stage every night with a mic you WOULD do well to go for a better build of cable but even then a 10mtr one should not be above $20 US.
