The New Tone Thread

It's funny, y'know, but I always thought that Mosrites look a bit upside down when they're the right way up! :D

The story goes that Semi Moseley came up with the Mosrite shape by flipping a Strat upside down and sort of tracing around it.

I was involved in the original thread back in the cave.

Yup, me too.

This is the continuation of that thread.

The original tone thread wasn't called "the tone thread" at all. This all started several years ago in the cave by Sky Blue Lou, who occasionally still pops in here, talking about Mick Ronson's tone for his version of "Slaughter on 10th Avenue" - an old Ventures song. I'm a big fan of Ronson's tone myself, and The Ventures, so I got in on it. Lt Bob and miro got in on it. Bubba got in on it. And just like that we were at 100 or so pages and people started posting their own attempts at a Ronson sort of sound. Then that blossomed to guitar tone in general.

Then I got banned because, you know, butthurt and shit. I served my time like I always do, and when I got back I was still banned from the cave because...God only knows why. I was banned from the most disgusting shit-filled section of this site because the disgusting shitheads that frequented that place couldn't handle teh gerg. I beat those morons to death at their own pathetic game. I don't know if that's good or bad. Anyway, I couldn't get back to the original tone thread, so Telegram Sam, who has since completely vanished, started this one, and here we are.

This thread is a little Marshall-centric because most of us thread regulars have Marshalls, or amps voiced to sound like hot-rodded Marshalls. And let's be real, that script logo is easily one of the names on the Mount Rushmore of amps. To me, all makes, models, sizes, styles are welcome. It's no secret that I'm a Marshall fanboy, but I like pretty much any amp that makes rock and roll sounds. I love Fenders, Orange, HiWatts, boutiques, oddballs, whatever. If it's got tubes and you can plug a guitar into it, it's okay with me.

Nevermind was recorded mainly with the HH Jag, the old Mosrite (which you can actually hear him smashing to splinters at the end of the Nevermind album) and I think it was also an old Mosrite copy called a Univox.

I'm probably as much of a Nirvana nerd as Greg is a Ramones nerd. Not in a creapy self harming kinda way thouogh - I just think they wrote fucking great rock tunes and effectively put and end to permed blokes pouring themselves into leather trousers... at least for a while.

I'm working on a YouTube video to upload for you fuckers later on today!

That's kind of how I feel about Nevermind. I'm not a fan of the man himself particularly, but christ, those songs!!

I actually considered buying the Cobain Jag at one time. I saw sense and bought a standard Jap one instead.

By the way, I'm a bit of a modelmaker on the quiet - what do you think to this?

That's how I remember it. I remember Lou's experimentation with the half-cocked wah and turning his plexi up to ornament-shattering levels. :D I think that's where the loudness thing took root. Getting the amps up there in the zone where they sing. I can't remember the name of the thread now. Has it totally gone or was some of it salvaged?

It's a shame about Telegram Sam. Where did he go? And for that matter, where did NotThatBright go? Missing in action. :(

Yeah, I've considered it too. But then I also saw sense and realised that there's no point. I'm not trying to form a Nirvana tribute act or anything but I love the tone on In Utero - so just copied the pickup choice and got a guitar that I actually wanted instead.

That's excellent - it looks exactly like a real wheelie bin!

Seriously, that's a good effort! Do you sell them? You've got all the relicking - well Kurt wouldn't have a guitar relict - lets just call it damage - on there too.

There have been so many screen names come and go. Last I remember from Telegram Sam, he had some unexpected life shit come up, and poof, he was gone. NotThatBright keeps moving back and forth across the country, but he's such a drunk, he's probably in jail. Lol. AtomBomb is another cool guy that used to post more often, but he don't pop in much anymore.

And don't even get me started on the talented MP3Clinic regulars that have left for good.

I don't sell those models, it was just a bit of fun. I'm just making a bacon and egg sandwich then I'm gearing up to hit you all with a Sex Pistols tone. :)

Capitol idea. I just had coffee and croissants for breakfast so I might have a bacon sarnie to then go and check the surf. This being off work thing is fucking great.

Ok, as promised, some Pistols for you. If I was recording this for a cover version I don't think I would have it this gainy, but live it works well for that solid Steve Jones slab of sound.

Amp: Marshall JVM 410H
Cab: Standard 1960A
Guitar: Yamaha SG clone.

Intro: Crunch channel, orange mode. Vol. 4.5, Bass 3.5, Middle 5, Treble 5.5, Gain 8, Master 6, resonance OFF, lol, presence 5
Rest of song: Crunch channel, red mode. Vol. 4.5, Bass 3.5, Middle 5, Treble 5.5, Gain 8, Master 6, resonance OFF, presence 5

I like it, sounds pretty close, though I think it needs less gain.....for that particular song.

You get good bite though. I never wind my JVM's gain up that high. I usually go to the next gain stage and keep the knob turned down, but I'm gonna give this a try.

I totally agree about the gain. The Pistols' album sound comes from many layers of guitar at about the gain level of the intro. To attempt to replicate that thick texture live means a little more gain than I like. The recorded tone's still a bit too bassy - I'm going to check my mic placement.

I think it's the gain making it bassy. Particularly that channel. There's something intentional, or not, in the design of the crunch channel that makes it mimic JMP/JCM 800s in that when you run up the gain, bypassing the bright cap, it gets super fat. JMPs and JCMs do this naturally. I've always felt that channel is designed to do the same thing.

This is more like it - I moved my mic closer to the dustcap, took the gain down half a notch and the bass down a notch. Still gainier than the record for the reasons mentioned.

Where the hell is Dodsworth? He was supposed to be kicking ass in the tone thread, not fucking about in the sea on a fibreglass plank!

Do you mean you're going to give that song a try? That'll be interesting! You have a real LP for a start. As I say, I'm sharing my live tones really. The red crunch is not ideal at the same gain settings as orange crunch, but that's the option I have when I stomp on the pedal to bring the main part of the song in from the intro.

Do you mean you're going to give that song a try?

No, that's not what I meant, but sure, I'll give it a go. It's not my favorite Pistols song, but it's good.

I meant that instead of using higher gain modes with the gain turned down, which is my usual method, I'll try using milder modes with the gain turned way up.

You're miking G12T-75s right? Where do you have the mic?

Well, in the earlier clip I THOUGHT I had it in the classic position midway between the edge and the dustcap. My grille cloth is so effing opaque it's hard to tell even with a torch. It turns out I was much closer to the edge than I thought.

Do whichever Pistols song is your favourite, then - I like 'em all, I just want to hear your take on it. :D

I'm 'ere now. Been trying to record something but my hands are like fucking icicles!

Well, without question, my two fave Pistols songs are "No Feelings" and "Bodies". Maybe I'll take a swing at one of those.
