200 $ headphones or active monitors question

The M-Audio BX8 D2 are decent, don't own them but previewed them not that long ago. There's a few models not listed, by Yamaha and perhaps the JBLs (I've not personally heard them, but they are highly regarded) not listed I would choose ahead of the M-Audio.

A 3 INCH woofer with built in bass boost???? Not really a good idea. TRY TO SAVE FOR BETTER MONITORS !!! Any money you put into bad monitors is wasted money because you will only wish you had not spent the money when you realize it wasn't worth it. And don't turn around and buy more headphones if you can't afford better monitors now...............because you will need monitors sooner than later. I think you mentioned your budget is around $200 no? That's not far away from what you'll need to have some monitors you will keep for a long time. Hey listen.........this is just my advice and opinion. But trust me.............it's based on having been right where you are and learning the hard way. And don't forget to treat the room too. You'll be glad you did.

I recently got the Grado SR225e, and really like them for mixing. I had the same scenario, where I could either treat my studio (really my home office) and buy monitors, or go the headphone route. So far I am really happy with the SR225e and they are right around $200. OK build quality and superb sound and open back. Get the soft foam covers for comfort over long periods of mixing.
 
I went with some open-back headphones too after reading a lot of mixing gearheads saying they work fine.
One philosophy that got me to try the open-back is someone posted "the headphone mixing is better than a crappy room with crappy monitors."
 
I'm proud to say that i bought JBL LSR305 monitors. Now i just need to find some info on treating my home studio. Thx all the ppl that helped me. Mix on :)

Nice move. There's plenty of info right here in this forum to get you started on treating your room. You can read for days. These guys know their stuff.
 
Damn guys. I have been in the dark for so long. This is a completely new exprience for me. I can hear every change i make on eq and so other stuff i haven't been able to hear on phones. And i didnt treat my room yet. Realy nice . Thx again :)

Good deal.

Honestly, after you treat your mixing room, you won't hear much difference in your mixes, until you go to play them on other sound systems. Or other people listen to your tunes... then it pays off big time.

Good luck with your newly opened world of audio.
 
If you've got those JBLs anywhere near your front wall, then the bass from the ports is bouncing out and around and may be making you think there is more low end in the mix than there is - get some (4" minimum thickness) bass traps behind them.

Thx man, I will keep that in mind when doing treatment. I see traps are pretty expencive. Is there an alternative ?

Yes you make your own treatment / traps, plenty of guides here in the forums.
