Whats up dudes? Lots of great tones i heard this morning. So many good ones. All you Marhsall guys. You are all so dang cute.

Glad to hear things are brighter for you miner dude. That one tone a ways back, that thick ass Green tone was probably my favorite so far. But it was so far back now i don't see what value my commentary adds to it.

Haven't been around much, big (somewhat positive) changes at work for me so my office / home time has been grossly limited lots of fresh air for me lately. In the office today and then i am out on a data collecting mission for a few days tomorrow. Figure i'll hang my hat in here for the day hahaha.

But i am still around. Poke my nose in very briefly.

Miner, going back to the P-Rails pickup, duncan makes a replacement mounting ring called the triple shot that would be an easy way to control those P-Rails without drilling for mini switches or installing different pots. I almost went this route with my Epi LP special destruction/modification I did a while back but couldn't justify spending that much money on it and used what I had in my exiting stash of crap to finish out the electronics.

Nice man, I'd probably go that route just to keep from hacking a new (maybe used, but new to me) guitar up....

got a a busy week with gigs every day and a few doubles from last Wed thru the next Sunday but yesterday pointed out to me that I'm old.

Saturday night I played a pirate festival up in St. Augustine .... it was a big deal. A national organization of pirates with the Who's Who of pirates from all over the country.
The load-in was a bear with us having to haul a lot of gear thru 150 yards of gravel ... really wearing.

'twas fun .... but I got to bed around 3am .... (found out where the 'arghhh' comes from .... it's the next morning! :D)

So anyways ... bed at 3am and then I had to get up at 6:30am because I have an every Sunday gig in Ponce Inlet starting at 9am so I know it'll be a bit rough .... playing a gig on 3 1/2 hours of sleep.
But I make it thru the gig alright ... tear down and am on my way home about 2pm .... feeling a bit funky and thinking about getting something to eat and crashing .....

Phone rings ..... it's agent guy .... "can you do a double at Traders in New Smyrna at 4pm ?"
me with a tremor in my voice ....." ummmmm .... yeah?"
agent ... 'great ..... I'll call them and tell 'em"

so I turned around and headed to a gig ..... another 4 hours of singing and schmoozing on 3 1/2 hours of sleep ......... got home around 10:30pm.

All my gigs involve significant equipment haulage and except for the pirate gig they're all solo so it's just me ..... I feel like someone beat me up.
Glad I never have vocal issues though, thank goodness.

ahhh ..... ok .... time to run some errand before heading to tonight's gig.

And that's why you're in the fuckin' Louisiana Music Hall of Fame there Bob, you're a dependable, great musician...Grab a little rest when ya can dude...

Thanks Shan dude, & I'm glad to hear you're working a little more, while I know working sucks, I know it pays the bills too dude....hang in there brother....

Jdude: I'll answer your question from my "thanks" thread here...

I don't live there now, but only about 15-20 miles southwest from there, but you should get the idea....

Yeah, man. Looks like you really do live in the arse end of nowhere! Beautiful place though!

Anyway, been pissing about with my emulated output on my amp. Sounds a lot better than my first attempt now that I am a bit more used to the amp.

Here's some 80s style lead over that previous riff.
Doesn't sound bad as such, just a little flat and lifeless. The lead sounded really bad first time I recorded it, I've since added a very slight delay effect onto it to try and give it a bit more space.

So, emulated out - at this stage I wouldn't record a track with it but its a fuck of a lot better than using a sim.

It doesn't include the power-tubes - just the preamp. Master vol on the amp was on zero when this was recorded.

Sounds a little thin to me Jdude, especially in the mix clip, might try to turn the bass knob up on your amp....The HT-5 I had did a fair emulated recording thing, but IIRC, I had to set the amp's tone controls a lot different than if I were using a mic on the speaker...

Yeah, I had a bit of a play. It's just a bit gutless when emulated.
I'll have another mess about with it tomorrow. My new speaker should be arriving soon too... I'm edging ever closer to the tone I want.

They do sound a little flat. It's hard to replace the sound of a speaker moving air. They don't sound terrible though. You could probably trick em up with EQ and reverb.

Yeah, they're not great but they're alright for what I need them for. Gonna try the effects send into a sim cab at some point too. Don't want to spend too long playing about trying to emulate a tone I already have with a speaker and mic! Good for getting ideas down outside of my recording hours though.

minermaniac, here's some basic humbucker vs P-90 clips using the same amp, settings, cab, mic, blah blah. Same everything. Similar SGs - one being a fancy Angus sig model, the other being an SG Special with a P-90. The neck is beefier on the Special, but they're both regular Gibson SGs otherwise.

Marshall JVM - OD1 Green
Bass - 6
Mid - 4
Treb - 6.5
Presence - 5
Resonance - 0
Gain - 3
Ch vol - 6
Master vol - 5
Marshall 1960A 4x12 - Celestion G12-65
Shure SM57 on axis, 1" off grill, just outside dustcap.
No EQ or FX in DAW

Gibson Angus Young SG with Angus signature humbucker

Gibson SG Special Gregburst with P-90 bridge

Thanks for recording/posting these for me Greg, downloaded 'em & put 'em in the "Gerg" folder. I need some vocal tracks & a bass track, then I'd have a clip of about every piece of gear you own dude...:D.

To me, they both sound just great dude, just flat out great. I give the P-90 the edge in this comparison, dunno if it's me or what, but it seems to have a little more chunk/balls to the sound compared to the humbucker....

Could it be where the humbucker is compressing/overdriving the sound a little more, where it's pushing the amp a bit harder, & the amp has a little more room to "breathe" with the P-90??? Does that explanation make any sense????

The Angus SG does sound good, but I think the P-90 is closer to "that" AC-DC sound myself...Well done man, not only have you just raised the GAS level for an SG that I've been drooling for, but now the JVM GAS is kickin' in hard too...

Clips sound great Greg...

BTW, the beginning of that song is one of the most epic pieces of music ever to me dude, you couldn't have picked a better song/clip for this...

That's probably exactly what's happening. The humbucker is pushing hard and the amp compresses more. The P-90 is not hitting the front end as hard. The sustain is way better with the humbucker. The clarity is better with the P-90.

The JVM is not the best amp to really showcase the differences. It's just what I had hooked up right now. I need to do this same thing with the Plexis or 800.

Those clips sound great. Greg. I hear it like you guys described. The humbuckers have more sustain. P-90's might have more detail, but less sustain and not quite right for that particular tune.

Right, I just wanted to make sure I knew what was going on there dude. Why the fuck is it so hard for me to explain sounds sometimes???

I'd say using the JVM was a good thing for me because my DSL is closer to that amp than any of the others you have....But if you wanna throw some Plexi or 800 clips up dude, I'd like it personally....

I dunno Rami, I think the P-90 has "that" sound pretty damn close dude. I mean, they're both close, but I think the P-90 sounds closer to the guitar sound on that album than the 'bucker myself....But the humbucker does have more sustain, while the P-90 has more clarity....

Maybe. It could be that, since I heard the humbuckers first, the P-90's seemed to lack sustain. Maybe had I heard the other clip first, I'd think the humbuckers were too heavy? I don't know. I just fund the P-90's slightly weaker for that song. I haven't heard the original for a long time, so I'm just going on memory. They're definitely both very close either way.

That's why I just rolled with it. The JVM does behave more like your DSL than my other amps do.

I didn't really try to copy any tone or anything. I just fired up the amp and hit record. If you wanna nail *that* tone, I think the P-90 would be a good thing going into a high gain amp. A hot humbucker would be good going into a mild amp. It's just manipulating gear and characteristics to get the results you want.

Half of that "For Those About to Rock" lick is Malcolm, and half is Angus, so getting one close means the other will be off because their own tones are so different. And I did it with a pick. I'm pretty sure that lick is finger picked when they do it.
