Steenamaroo live drums on new(ish) track.

Hey guys.
I've had this mix sitting around for a while with sampled drums on it.

A local buddy of mine is getting back into drumming and just bought himself a nice new Yamaha studio custom, so I couldn't resist setting up a session to replace the sampled stuff.

Worked out pretty well, I think.
Drums only come in properly at about 1:49, for the impatient amongst you.

We used sm81s on OH, D12 (twelve) on kick, 421s on toms, re20 on floor tom and 57 on snare.

Anyway, I think the overall mix is pretty good but it's not a finished article just yet.
I have some guitar work I want to add to fill the thing out.

One pal is singing, another is drumming.
I'm doing everything else.

Lovely tune, nicely done. That chord modulation at 1.40 and 2.48 could use something to make it clearer. Maybe hit the mute button on something at that point? Maybe another instrument to bolster the chord changes? Maybe some multed distortion on something? Dunno. Just an idea. Really like the song.

Ha ha! Did you use VST strings, etc in a mix showcasing the real drum kit? :D

It's a pretty good song.
The drums are a little repetitive; it could use some fill. Not necessarily big, self-indulgent ones, just a few snare trills here and there.
The tone is good tho. It sits well with everything else.

Thanks man. Absolutely yes. Good call. I'm more inclined to add something than take away but I can hear something pretty prominent marking that point.
Like big bass strings and a timp or something?

The MIA clean guitar work I mentioned could maybe really open up there too?

There's no etc, though. Everything else is recorded, I think.

Interesting you mention fills. We actually spent a lot of time talking about this and agreed to sit back a little but maybe we went a too far?
This was kinda an audition for the drummer so at some point several months from now we'll be doing 10+ songs with him including this one.
There's plenty of time for note taking. :)

I'm glad you feel they sit well, though. That's a big relief.

Maybe just personal taste, but the snare pops out ahead of the mix most of the time in my ears. Tune is awesome.
 
No, sorry, just 2-3dB too kicking to my ears (not my normal genre of stuff, so, like I said, probably personal taste). :)

Yeah, I've made it fairly bright and snappy so, again, maybe too much?

I agree - the snare is just a bit too loud and could go down a db or so. Great tune and mix is great otherwise....
