Help with Cubase midi Setup

Hey. I bought Cubase AI8 and Steinberg UR22 a few days ago, and it works perfect, but i don't understand almost anything of the MIDI setup. I have done like in all the tutorials i've seen but the signals of my old Technics piano which is connected to the UR22 by two midi cables never get through to cubase. I don't know what i should do. It just seems like their got nothing to do with each other, not any signs of connection in Cubase. Is it even possible? Thanks.

First off welcome to the forum!

Next I would like to make sure you are aware that MIDI only supplies data information. It does not send audio information. In other words, if you wish to hear the sounds from your keyboard, that will not happen with MIDI.

If that was elementary then I apologize and mean no disrespect.


I am no MIDI guy in any way, but maybe we can come up with things to try.

In Devices>Device Setup...what is listed for MIDI Port Setup? I am just curious.

I do know that USB connected MIDI devices are selected by clicking the '+' sign at the top of the Device Setup screen. Not even sure if that applies....

Just throwing some things out there. Sure someone with more knowledge will be around soon.

Like Jim I am NO expert either and it has been a long time since I helped son sort MIDI matters!

However, one wrinkle has stuck (cos it took for fekkin AGES to find it out!) Go, File, Preferences and under General, tick "MIDI Thru Active" if you don't, no sounds. Also setup for Windows Wavetable if offered. Yes, it's 'orrible but it gets you MIDI sounds and then you can move on to better.

A very simple progg that I suggest peeps download to test MIDI setups is Modartt's Pianoteq. This is just a few click to make lovely piano sounds, if you need a good Joe, you could do a lot worst than buy it! Has a very simple recording and exporting system as well iirc.

A few things to check:

Make sure midi out of Technics goes to midi in of ur22, and midi out of UR22 goes to midi in of Technics.

Make sure that Cubase is seeing the midi in of the UR22. I don't know Cubase, so I can't help you do that bit.

If you want the midi to go back to the Technics and play it, you need also to direct the output of a midi track to the UR22.

If you want the midi to play something else, you can do as Dave suggested, i.e. direct the midi track's output to the Wavetable, or load a VSTi on the track.

BTW: out of curiosity, which Technics do you have?

Just thought! There are times when you don't WANT the keyboard to speak and in that case you are looking for something called "local off".

Thanks for all answers, but i've done most of it. The "midi port setup" in "devices" looks like this:

The preferences is set to "MIDI Thru Active"
The Midi out from the keyboard is set to midi in to the soundcard, and the midi in from the keyboard is set to midi out to the soundcard.
The VST connection tabs looks like this:

And the panel thing to the left on my midi track (where i have selected the HalionOne VST thing) looks like this:

to me it looks like its connected most places...

Did you open up halion Sonic and open an instrument?

yes i did, but i think the problem is with the piano now. I tried with with my digital drums, and it worked perfecty. The digital piano is called Technics PCM PR40, its very old, and hard to find any instructions on internet. But isnt it supposed to be midi capable since it has midi i/o?

Technics Keyboards :: Manuals. You! Can wade through that if you like!
Beware very old MIDI gear, some of it is not General MIDI. I have an old Yamaha PSS790 and it has MIDI in/out/thru and talks the data but not quite! Played into a modern MIDI device it plays the wrong instruments! ('cept piano) Hilarious but not what you want.

Apparently you can "re-map" such gear to play correctly but tis tedious I believe?
