So I have an Alesis Multimix4 USB, withCubase LE 7 running on a 64bit Windows 7 laptop with 8gig ram. My issue is that I can record track 1 (guitar) no prob. But when I try and record track 2 (drums), track 1 automatically plays. Which I want. However, track 1 is then recorded into track 2. So track one contains guitars, and track 2 contains guitars AND drums. How in the hell can I get track 1 to play (for my reference) and NOT record onto track 2 when I record drums. I have been searching the net for almost two weeks, with no luck. I am using this setup to record practice and possibly a crappy demo cd. Thanks to any recording God who can help.

The answer will be with the Cubase 'VST Connections' input buses and the panning of your mixer.

Your mixers USB output is stereo. Which means that in order to send to separate tracks you have to pan the input tracks to one side or the other to isolate it. Pan left=1 mono track. Pan right=1 mono track.

I am not sure how this mixer is going to work in regards to playback, but for recording you will need to setup two 'MONO' Input buses in Cubase. One for channel 1 (panned left on the MM4) and one for channel 2 (panned right on the MM4). Devices>Device Setup...VST Connections>Inputs>Add Bus>Mono. Create one for the left out of the MM4 and one for the right.

Then create a 'mono' track for each (Project>Add Track>Audio>Mono>Add Track) using the input bus you created by selecting the input for each recording track in Cubase via the 'Inspector' window (Far left panel input is symbol that looks like '>]'. Track one will have the input 1 bus selected. The second track will have input 2 bus selected.

Let me know if this gets you going man.

:)

Ok. I figured that out in audacity Saturday, just haven't had time to fool with Cubase on it yet. Can you add additional tracks and have the first two tracks playback and not record on tracks 3 and 4?

Yeah, just disable record.

By default Cubase may be arming the track you have selected.

Changing this setting in preferences may make things easier for you:

File> Preferences...>VST. Change 'Auto Monitoring' to 'Tapemachinestyle'. Also under File>Preferences...>Editing>Project & MixConsole. Uncheck 'Enable Record on Selected Audio Track.

This will make monitoring of the playback of track automatic when record button isn't pressed as well as make 'record enable' a manual thing as you will likely want for what you are doing.

Finally some answers. I was wondering about the tape playback thing. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Thank you so much.

AFAICS the Multimix 4 has no ASIO drivers and Cubase might not be happy with that.

The Alesis site suggest the download of ASIO4ALL and this MIGHT be a solution. If not give Reaper a go.

Dave.

I was thinking about Reaper. Is it comparable to Cubase? Audacity leaves a lot to be desired in the EQ department.
