Schwarzenyaeger

Formerly "Dog-In-Door"
What I'm working on at the moment.
The sounds in the intro are NASA recordings of Jupiter. In stereo!

The song follows a turbulent flight to the planet.

Version 3:

Vers 2: Intro levels balanced more smoothly with the rest of the song. A few velocities changed with. Drums louder. A tad more low end on the bass. Solo more consistent. Syncopations kept. Kick less woofy. A drum hit or two moved.
Vers 3: now with less sub

The Jupiter sounds are pretty cool, but I think they should come up in volume in the early part so that when the guitars come in, then the main song, people aren't scrambling to get the volume control down. When the drums come in, the guitars seem to be not in time with them at some points. Same thing the second time the drums come in. When everything slows down at 3:30 I get the same off-time feel. The kick is very 'thumpy' and the snare very heavy in reverb (too much reverb for my taste).

This one's really cool. I checked all the usual suspects while I was listening to this one:

Kick: check

Snare: check

Cymbals: check

Bass: check

Guitars: check (almost)

One mix issue is how the solo guitar sort of disappears in its quiet notes at about 2.23.

I love how you change up the rhythm part way through. You do really interesting stuff, Mr Schwarzenyaeger. (God I wish you had a shorter nick.)

Also (and I realize this is big so feel free to ignore it) you could easily truncate the guitar into at the 1.10 point. It would serve the movement of the whole tune better, I think.

Bring out that little bass run at 3.20 more. You might have to mult it.

That's all I got. Yeah, I'm a fan. It sounds good.

Interesting song. Great Guitar tone, you got that nailed. Bass sounds really good too. Good job.

Why not end with the Jupiter sounds, too? :)

This was nice.

The Jupiter sounds were very cool indeed. My first thought is that the guitars are totally overpowering the drums and that the drums need to be much more present for the tune to rock out the way it deserves. There are also several timing issues between the rhythm guitars and drums mainly. But yeah ... this sounds like a "drums down" mix. Some cool guitar playing and nice musical sections and all. I enjoyed the listen, but I really wanted to hear the drums smack me in the face more. :)

I thought it was cool. Not really my thing musically (the Jupiter sounds that is). But the drums sound real good. Guitars sound very good too.

I think the bass could come up a smidge.

Very good guitar playing.

I like the creativity. The guitar tones are perfect. The kick is beating on me pretty hard...as if it was mixed to be a lead instrument. Other than that the mix is very good.

If you could point out which moments you mean exactly, that would be helpful.
Some of the drum beats are syncopated and not accenting the same beats as the guitar riffs on top of them. At this point, I've heard the song so many times, I wouldn't know if it's just syncopation or actually off.

@mjphotos: I know what you mean about the intro. It's always fun for me to do it at home when I know that it's coming but I can imagine it being too surprising for an unfamiliar listener.

Thanks for listening, people. I'll get a new version up on the weekend.

Nice stereo spread on the intro. Good use of delay on the noodly bass to match the atmosphere of the spacey NASA sounds.

I like your guitar tone, it's nice and tight on the palm mutes. Heavy, but you obviously understand that less is more when it comes to gain. The bass is a little thin to me, a little too much on the highs and not nearly enough on the thumpy bumpy frequencies.

Cool idea. I'm usually only mildly entertained by instrumentals, but you put together an interesting and varied piece here. I admire your sense of adventure (to other planets, even!)

I really liked this one, Dog. Most things sounded great and I personally like the big dynamic shifts between movements. If I have one nit it's with the kick drum - it's very woofy and woolly, whereas a more defined sound might suit better. Great stuff.

I liked the expressive guitar work near the end, it has some nice vibrato. Interesting piece of music. Nice job

Sounds great to me. The kick is more defined, but it's still making my cans jump around a lot. Have you added very short left and right delays to the kick and panned them hard with loads of sub? That's what it sounds like, anyway. :D

They've got more sub now, definitely.
I haven't given the mix a test on speakers yet. It's all headphones. I'm probably not hearing it.
Good call.

edit: I also just read that you can't actually land on Jupiter. Oh well.

The intro isn't really an intro to my ears - prelude, maybe.
Then the Intro to the next bit seemed cool but was dislocated in time & space from the main.
Bass tone - nice proggy growl.
The kick needs to be prominent to cut through the very dense sections where the guitar is chugging.
Its treatment could be varied at need rather than being set for the song.
The pop rocky melodic lead section mystifies m - I couldn't find a phase, orientation or alignment to match it, particularly as it precedes a Telstar bit - that bit makes sense in the scheme and within the program of the music.
Really interesting, challenging which is good too.

You could land on one of its moons, like Europa, though. :)

Really cool - mix sounds great to me - the most impressive part though is how you put all the different "motifs" together.
Creatively done and the instrument choices/arrangement work well together.

Awesome stuff. Just one nit that wasn't covered. May be something yo did intentionally, but the three cowbell hits right at the end sound like they were recorded from 10' away. Don't mesh with the rest of the drums...
