Still Me

When the vocal comes in, drop the tinkly thing a couple dB - it's distracting. This one reminds me of someone I've heard, but I can't remember who, but I know they're damn good. For me, the biggest deal in this mix is that I think whatever you're doing with the vocal isn't the best thing for this mix. I'd turn it up way more. Put more verb on it maybe. The arrangement makes a big sound, but the vocal's got a small feel to it. I know that treatment sort of fits the vibe of the lyric, but I still think this tune would have more power if the vocal were bigger somehow.

I hear ya. I'm not experienced in vocal enhancement techniques. I read a few techniques on SoS that I'm trying out, but nothing is just wowing m yet. I'll keep at it. Thanks!

I kind of take the position that this is the mix you had.....at least the revised one. I have zero suggestions to make on the mix. No buzzing, no noises, good songwriting. There's a sparseness there that you don't usually find in a mix. It's uncluttered, and the song reminds me a bit of the Beatles. Perhaps shorten the song down a bit.

I'm not sure that get what you're saying. Is it that the mix sounds the same as before? Thanks for the listen and comments!

I agree with all that. Definitely has a Beatles vibe to it.

I just realized it's called "Still Me". Until just now, every time I read it I thought it was "Silly Me". :D I have no idea why, but I might have to use "Silly Me" as a song title now. :D

Silly Rami :-)

Everything seems on point level-wise.. Personally, I'm not wild the kick sound. It's pretty big, loose and woofy and kind of takes over.. kind of Total Eclipse of the Heart-y. It catches me when the backing instruments kick in around 1:20, where it almost sounds like something swells in a hair early. Small nits.. in general it seems pretty well mixed. Nice job.

OK, I'll take a look. I may have a compressor on the kick, can't remember if it was this one. And I hear the early swell at 1:20 as well. I'll fix that up. Thanks!

Second listen: After the band gets large and things go into quiet accompaniment mode, like around 1.40 and 2.40 for instance, there's mostly just voice, bass and drums - in those segments, the bass and drums sound like they're both panned slightly right, is that right? How do you have them panned? I think it would be better if they were more balanced - the bass to the left, for instance. Whatcha think?

Yeppers, that electronic kit is all panned pretty far right, especially the hi-hat. This is one of those things where in my head it all made perfect sense. But that damn electronic kit seems to be throwing a wrench in the works of reality. First it tainted the sound of the acoustic kick and snare samples, then it jacked with the stereo image, now it's just flat out pissing me off. I'm starting to think that it'd be better if I mute that kit for all of the parts of the song where it's not actually serving as an accent. Basically just leave it in the intro and the last few bars, and center it (or at least stretch it across the stereo field like you suggested).

Between fiddling with vocal widening and taming the TS808 kit, I think I'll have my hands full on this mix for another day or two. Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Just had chance to listen to the update properly. The overheads are at a much better place on version two. I'm still not crazy on the snare sound, but I don't think it's a dealbreaker.

Good song Tad. Those lyrics really are a downer though aren't they ;)

The snare seems quite up front at 3mins.
I really like the song.
The mix is pretty cool.
The lead is pretty creamy and classic rock which isn't a bad thing. I like the drum machine ending!

Thanks Rob! I'm seriously waffling on the snare sample as well. I'm going to experiment with a few others to see if I can find one that doesn't succumb to the influence of the drum machine snare as badly. Or I'll just get rid of the drum machine snare throughout most of the song.

Thanks Ray, I'll fiddle with the snare and see what I can do about it. I'm hoping that a different sample will help a few issues.
