Hello everyone,
I have a simple or i may call it Noob question lol
my question is i Just bought a brand new Presonus bluetube Dualpath Preamp
And as soon as i open the package i wanted to switch the Tube Inside i wanted to
Change the stock tube it has for a Nos 12ax7 i Purchase for it.
So here is my question i change the tubes remove the stock tube and put the nos 12ax7
And as soon as i plug the presonus bluetube the tube lights up is that normal?
The nob of the tube drive is all the way down (tube off) and it still lights up red the tube.

Does it suppost to light up as soon as i plug the power? Or this doesnt suppost to happen? Please help and thank you

Although someone else may be able to answer your question directly, I'd ask what does the stock tube do?

The tube probably has a led behind it to light it up? Did the new tube actually sound better than the stock tube?

Alan.

I dont know because i didnt even try it with the stock tube so i wount know if it lights up as soon as i plug the power...like i said i unboxed it and switch the tubes right away

I dont know about the led behind it and yes it sounds warmer and fuller with the nos tube

I know it sounds condescending but I think that was a mistake, unless you have experience with this model already.
IMO it'd be worth switching them back to see how it sounds stock, and to see how it lights up and reacts.

Please, do come back and let us know your findings. People are always talking about switching out tubes around here. :)

I have experience with a ART TUBE PREAMP Yes and i never Like the cheap sound the stock chineese tubes it brings thats why i switch it imediatly

Interesting, I picked on of these up second hand the other day (I am a sucker for a good price, call be a gear junky) and I have yet to give it a good testing out, what brand of tube did you put in?

I did not know if they put a led behind the tube to hi-light it like some brands (I could not remember on mine) The Behringer 2200 does, and my Studio Projects VTB-1 pres have a blue Led inside.

Cheers
Alan.

Hey guys im back and yes you was right in the money there..because yes indeed it was a led light behind the tube that lights it up eatch time you plug the power.

The tube type i bought was Some Nos tung-sol and Some Jj Tubes for the preamp

KhatPhat...

When you say..."And as soon as i plug the presonus bluetube the tube lights up is that normal?"

Do you mean inside the tube like this...

The filaments/heaters will glow when the tube is powered up and is normal. Some glow more than others.

I can't see a reason there would be an LED to give fake glow as the unit looks sealed up and no way obvious to see the tube.

No it wasnt a light like those as i mention it was a led light behind the tube connected to the board that lights up...i think is for giving the impression that the tube is activated or someting.

The LED is to make us feel warm and fuzzy about having a valve in there LOL. I just love this stuff. I am looking forward to trying mine out in the near future, I have a couple of different valves hanging around so I might give them a try to see if they are indeed any different.

Once again Guys thankz for the great help.and for answering my questions

Those starved plate designs in budget tube preamps don't pump enough voltage/current through the tube to make it glow very brightly, so they backlight it with an LED to give it the illusion that it's really heating up the tube. As far as I understand, if they're not pumping enough juice through the tube to make it glow, that the tube is most likely not doing much in the signal flow other than completing the circuit. Not a lot of the tasty harmonic distortion that is normally associated with tubes. I had the same experience with the ART Tube MP years ago. Drive it hard enough to start distorting, and there's nothing pleasant about the saturation that you get...it sounds remarkably like transistors clipping.

These pres do not really sound like tube pres, true, but for the price who expects them to. The tube blend does add a little edge which is useful sometimes for electric guitar and such but they sound all right clean. These Presonus pres would sound a whole lot better then the ART Tube MP, which in turn sounds like a Behringer MIC100 or 200, the only thing I have ever use the Behringer MIC100 on (bought for $20) was a harmonica mic and to run a recorded guitar track back through for an extra dirty guitar track.
