I have the TASCAM US-800, which has served me well, and still does actually (Thanx Jimmy).

But, there are no new drivers available for it, and I have Windows 8. It still works with W8, but I always have to re-boot my computer every couple of hours if I'm watching Youtube videos. Funny thing is, I can record forever with it and it doesn't give me any problems. But as soon as I watch Youtube videos, it ends up giving me the blue screen of death after a few hours.

But the main reason I want a new interface is because I'm a lazy bastard and I want 10 inputs so that I don't have to un-plug and re-plug stuff.

I definitely need 10 inputs or else it's not worth changing interfaces.

I saw this Roland. Anyone know anything about this one? :

News - New 16 input audio interface from Roland

If anyone has any other suggestions, lay them on me. I have a feeling there should be some less expensive ones. That Roland is a little expensive.

Thanx.

Actually, taking a closer look at the features of the Roland I linked to above, it's got a ton of shit I don't need.

auto=input level, Input-output displays, 4 stereo monitor outs, and a bunch of other shit that I do not need.

I just want a good simple interface with 10 inputs.

The Roland looks pretty nice and what I read on the reviews it has great performance, it even states you cab put two on the same USB bus without performance loss. Not an expert, but if you go down in grade, you lose the probably some performance and preamp grade. Some reviews equate the Roland with some of the higher end interfaces.

For the price and what it appears you get, might be worth living with the added features. Looks like a really nice unit at a pretty good price.

Thanx man. It does look nice. But it seems it's too new to be available used. A quick look on Ebay didn't show any. I don't know, man. $900 is a little steep. I don't think pre-amps can be THAT much better as to make a difference worth spending that much money on. I know I'll have to spend probably somewhere in the $500-$700 range to get 10 inputs. But since, like I said, the US-800 is still serving me well, $900 is a bit much just for the luxury of not having to un-plug stuff. I'll have to think about that one or keep looking for something else.

What about the 1800? It runs about $300, I thought you were ready to step up.

I might be interested in swapping my US-1800 for your US-800. I got mine from Jimmy also, for a great price, and I'm willing to share in the benefit of that deal. You pay postage both ways. It's got 8 mic pres, but Jimmy says you can get 10 out of it if you use XLR to 1/4 on the last two inputs or two external mic pres (which I'll sell to ya, too :D)

the only thing that might be a concern is whether the US-1800 behaves the same as the US-800 with youtube and all. I'll try it out here with my Win7 computer if that'll help.

The US 800 drivers always had issues with changing between input from PC and Windows. Never had that issue with the 1641 or 1800.

Now, is it W8 compatible? I can't help as I do not have either W8 or the 1800 anymore.

Step up? Yes, but $900 is a pretty big step for a pretty small benefit.

That would be awesome. I'd be glad to pay the postage both ways. Why would you do that, Chili? Even if it does the same thing concerning Youtube, etc....wouldn't bother me too much if it meant getting the other inputs.

I'm pretty sure it would be compatible with W8, but like I said above, it wouldn't bother me too much if it wasn't, as long as the only issues are the same ones I'm already having with the 800.

Thanx guys.

Why would you do that, Chili?

Like I said, I got it off of Jimmy for super-cheap and I'm willing to share a little of the good fortune. :) I have been using it to record my kid's school band and it turns out I really only need 2 or 4 inputs. I use a UAD Apollo for my studio stuff, so the 8 inputs is overkill for me.

I can use one of those inputs without a pre with my active bass, right?

Yup. Inputs 9 & 10 are 1/4" and have Guitar/Line switches.

PM me your address, we'll figure it out from there.

Awesome man. You're a good man.

Will do. Thanx.

This now allows me to spend that 500-700 hundred bucks on a set of monitors.....I'm still using cheap "Realistic" speakers from an old stereo system. My next thread will be about monitors. :D

This is how the world should work. It all started with Jimmy's generosity with selling Chili and me the interfaces for $100 each. Now, Chili's passing some good karma to me from Jimmy. If and when I ever need an interface to replace the US-1800 that Chili's sending me, I'll be giving it away for free. It's a beautiful thing. :)

Good thing I didn't waste my money on that Roland. Automatic input level control, LED's, etc......gimme a break. :D

I use Bose bookshelf speakers with a sub for most of my mixing. Event ALP5's for dialing in each track.

Yeah, I've always put off buying monitors because I have a well-treated room. I've always said I'll take shitty speakers in a well treated room over great speakers in a non-treated room any day. I got to know my speakers, you can't get to know a shitty room. But it's time for some monitors now.

Just a thought!
How about staying as you were and buying Win7?
If you do not presently have OS and DAW on an SSD, good time to do it? Peeps SAY SSDs are ***t fast. Might be Emp's new kit but they do boot PDQ I am pretty sure.

Dave.

You lost me after "Just a thought". :D

No but seriously, did you not follow and see that Chili is sending me a US-1800? That seems like the simplest, best and most sensible solution. Why would I buy anything at this point?

Hmm, I don't get how you go from audio interface to SSD's....
