I just wanted to thank gozmozis for his critic of my mix. I'll listen to my mix again and try to hear each of your points. That's why I'm here, to learn from you guys, I appreciate your time and thoughts.

Just happy to comment and listen to all you guys mixes.

Hi Rob,
Lots of interesting ideas in your mix. So many that I think it starts to sound more like a remix of the song.
I' m no expert or anything, but I think we should try to figure out what is in the artist or producer's mind, and how we can build a mix that would please them and ourselves. Not easy. I love amp simms. My mix has a few guitar simulators there, but I stayed clear from the guitars... Too much messing around with other peoples guitar tone might be very dangerous! ;)
... And the lead vocal came in a bit too loud, maybe?
Anyhow, just my 2cents. Lots of unexpected and cool ideas in your mix!
Cheers!

Thanks a lot for this. The producer obviously had a sound and mix in mind as the tracks were layered up when the song was made, adding bits and removing bits along the way I'm sure. It would be too easy to aim at a mix which sounded like the original master mix, but most of us here are home guys and don't have access to fab treated rooms and wonderful equipment, so we probably wouldn't get close and even if we did, it would really only serve as "good practice", which we all need of course and this material has given us the opportunity to do this, so thanks again PureMix for this. Given this stance (mine of course!), I decided rightly or wrongly, to add my own flavour to the sound whilst trying not to get too far away from the original feel.

I agree the lead vox was a little loud, and I also thought the BV's were a little tame in the middle, so have widened them a bit. I've also volume automated the kick across most of the track now - sometimes it came though a little too in your face and spoilt the sound. Same for some of the bass and piano.

I hope this mix is a little better. It will be my final one as I have a 9 minute KVR OSC classical piece to finish off with the same deadline.

Good luck everyone - nice to meet some of you. You are all pretty damned good at what you do, so it'll be great to see what the next mix brings? Maybe something with a big orchestra or the like? Now that's hard!

Cheers all,

Rob (aka doctorbob)

Hi here is my mix!

I mixed OTB with SSL Matrix console and some outboard gear for the most important elements. My daw is Logic.
I also applied some analog processing on the master bus just for color and not for level.

This is a great song, my aim was to create interest during sections, mainly fader riding and a bit of compression.
Let me know what do you think about it.. all the best from Rome!

Hi all,

Just uploaded my mix. I mixed in Cubase with mainly UAD and Soundtoys plugins. For the vocal reverb, I used Lexicon MPX-1. At the end I sent the mix through a pair of Neve 1073 preamp.
Thanks for the opportunity, I really enjoyed mixing this track, I hope we will have some more opportunities like this in the future.

very nice mix! :)

I just uploaded my mix yesterday to PureMix Cloud, and I'm excited to be able to participate in this mixing contest, this not only gave me a good body of work to practice my mixing skills on, but it also gave me some stems that I can further used to improve my mixing skills. I thought Amber Skye's audio production and music arrangements was on point, and for me that made it very easy to understand the flow and focus of the music production.

Now for my mixing techniques: although I have Pro Tools 10 I decided use Reason 7 just to see how it handles those lord number of stems, what I done for my "Howlin" mix was a little bit of balancing of the audio levels and in the stereo image for all the tracks, I used some equalization to enhance certain audio tracks, I used some compression and slap on some reverb to give the mix a sense of space.

Thank you PureMix for this opportunity and I really hope you guys enjoy my mix.

My Mix is on the cloud.

Great song and great challenge. It's not an easy mix to do !

Mixed on PC with Avid Pro Tools 11 with Metric Halo Channel Strip 3 and some Waves Plug-ins.

Thank you PureMix for this great NYC production.

hey guys!

I'm uploading my mix on the cloud right now :)

I mixed it in ze box, using cubase 7.5, somes stock plugins, waves, soundtoys, slate digital, flux:: , softube.. and my beloved Focal Solo 6 for monitoring.

It was very fun to work on it, a lot of tracks, layers of vocals, try to find the right spot for each element, giving vibe and space.

I didn't mastered the song but I leveled it with a limiter to a "commercial level" for a producteur delivery.

Hope you'll enjoy it :)
