Doctorbob, That is close to the guitar tones I am using in my mix.

Thanx. I processed the verse guitar with some recabs to add a little more edge so it cuts through a bit more than the original does.

Have listened again to my mp3 more critically and it still mangles the dynamics, so much so that the vox balances go awry. So, have redone it yet again (and toned down the banging piano chords in the final playout which is not nearly so apparent in the mix from the DAW - weird!)

Attached ... any thoughts?

Cheers,

Rob

:D

That was some solid feedback. I went and listened to your track and Dammmn your clearly very well practiced :p:p:p. Seriously though sick mix.

The advice you gave me about how compressed my track was really was true. So I went back had a fresh start and though Im not sure about it I've re-uploaded my mix. Didn't really change any of the plugins I used (except less compression HAHA) :D

You guys can check it out here, Tell me if you think i've done a better job?? than my original mix :)

Hey man nice mix but think hear some phase problems with your drums

Filename requirements?

What is the filename for the submission to be? IS there something we need to follow? ("title-<name of submitter>.mp3"?)

Hi Rob,
Lots of interesting ideas in your mix. So many that I think it starts to sound more like a remix of the song.
I' m no expert or anything, but I think we should try to figure out what is in the artist or producer's mind, and how we can build a mix that would please them and ourselves. Not easy. I love amp simms. My mix has a few guitar simulators there, but I stayed clear from the guitars... Too much messing around with other peoples guitar tone might be very dangerous! ;)
... And the lead vocal came in a bit too loud, maybe?
Anyhow, just my 2cents. Lots of unexpected and cool ideas in your mix!
Cheers!

Hello, I think it's wonderful to have this kind of opportunity, I tell them a little about what I did in my mix, the first was to level all channels and give everyone a position that looked me right in the pan, the following was put some low cut filters on tracks to give a little more clarity, use a parallel compression on drums to give it more strength, but not saturate too.
then use a couple of reverb for vocals, use a room and plate, and some delay.
equalize each voice channels, to highlight a little more in the mix, and I added some distortion to the rhythmic base (bass and drums).
And, that was all my work, I hope you like it.

Cheers everyone. I had the fortune and pleasure to have access to an amazing studio that I was working in out of town and through some work/hours trade, I did this mix in this studio. It is well equipped with some awesome analog gear, but not very retro (very modern desk and hardware pieces). Neve AMS 88RS, a real Veritgo Sound Compressor, Elysiia Compressor, some great tubes, and even a reconditioned Studor to run stems through (didn't have actual tape, but it's worth running audio through like a preamp). For tape compression I happen to be a Nebula fan. My main DAW is Reaper and only Reaper.
For the mix, I decided to keep it present, not overly-automated, straight-forward. There are so many awesome aspects to the stems, but the real gold are in the vocals. So that's what is showcased in my mix.
I'd be happy to break down a gear list in better detail, but am pressed for time right now. Feel free to PM or email me. Good luck everyone! We are all very lucky to have a chance to work with such great sounding tracks from such a talented artist!

(I sure wish that we could upload better quality files both to this forum and for the contest...... Enjoy!

Listen to your mix. Overall sound and balance is nice. But the chorus sound so compressed thats it´s just distorting in the bass. Not pleasant at all IMO to listen to. You should have cleaned it up more or easy up the limiter IMHO.

Hi,
Here is my mix. (unmastered)

Hope you enjoy.
Thank you and good luck everyone.

Nice mix and balance. The reverb make sound little messy sometimes yough. But I like the idea but it didn´t go all the way for me.

really nice to hear your kind words regarding my mix! I think your mix is much better now. In the first verse it sounds like a kick is paned to the right. That was a tad distracting. Overall balance is god and the next step with this mix would be to get some more clarity and high freq to the sound. Your on the right way!

Here's my submission for the contest. Lots of tracks to work with on this one, found myself pushing a lot of the elements back to give it some focus and let the vocals shine. Hope you enjoy.

nevermind. changed my version again. sometimes back is forward. new version will come up

Writing some comments as I listen

Beat is to compressed IMO and the vocal sounds on top of the music and don´t have the support as it would need. A little more stereo would be nice for me and the chorus fx is not working for me. Nice to hear that you are clear in your mix where the focus should be! That make the mix easy to listen to.

i've just uploaded my mix. i used pro tools, with some plugins but also some analog outboard gear. Some compressors, eq's and reverbs.
It was a nice competition. thx for the chance.

Did a listening on some of your mixes and wrote down some things I heard.

HarveyA

Vocal sounds low in volume and the mix could use some eq to clear things up and the vocal could use a automation or another compression. Nice sound on the kick, round and warm! Balance could use some more attention IMO.

I just wanted to thank gozmozis for his critic of my mix. I'll listen to my mix again and try to hear each of your points. That's why I'm here, to learn from you guys, I appreciate your time and thoughts.

Oh!
