HELLO!

Let me introduce myself quickly, I'm a 22 yo semi-noob hobby producer who spends almost all free time learning music theory and freebasing in Logic. I have a past as a drummer but quit playing regularly a few years back. Ever since i've been using both FL-Studio and Logic, using sequencers to drum instead.

Anyhow, i would say that i know the core-basics behind producing. I have felt that i've been stuck now for a while, and i want to keep pushing and getting better as quickly as possible. I am well aware of that there ain't no quick fix overnight to become a professional musician , but i would like to steepen my learning curve a little bit. I'm mostly in to making deep house and indie/nu disco stuff, and i don't think my mastering and mixing skills are quiet there yet..

I would be really happy to get some tips! How do i save myself time, and become a better producer? How do i take the next step?

Thank you!

I'll give you a quick answer to get you started. Besides the monitors and room treatment answer, go to the MP3 clinic and listen to the mixes and hear some of the answers. You will start seeing a pattern for new folks. Too much verb, too hot, too harsh, too low, phase issues, etc. You will start to get a better idea of what to start looking for.

Once you get a feel for that, start researching on the plugins, compression, EQ, understand better what everything does. Then start to work on making sure your room is at the best you can make it.

All of the information is here, but that is where I would start. Listen, read, listen some more. You can get a lot of information that way.

Wow! Pretty vague question. It's hard to tell you what the "next level" is if we don't really know what "level" you're at now. What equipment do you have as far as monitoring, etc.....Is your room treated? If not, I would say that would be the next priority, but that's just a shot in the dark.

freebasing in Logic
You might want to cut out the cocaine, or at least cut back on the freebasing. Try snorting instead.

Other than that, all I can say is:

You can do it!!!!!!
Go get 'em Tiger!!!!!

I always get blackout when i try to form a topic with adequate questions. It might be worth to mention that i use KRK-monitors, the cheap version (rokit8). As for the freebasing expression, it seems that i've misused a drug related term..? I mean that I'm just doing what falls into my mind. Anyhow my room is not treated, and i won't do it just yet.

DM60:
I will definatley take your advice! Thank you!

I was going to ask the same thing, then I realized that it ain't worth it.

OP:

You can do it!!!!

Don't stop believing!!!!!!!

I think if you add "It is within you!!!!!!!!!" to your list, that would be almost perfect... :D

Stop theorising. Post some actual material in the MP3 clinic and let the ears there give you some guidance.

Are you implying that i'm stupid or what is your point? I would love to turn my livingroom into Abbey Road, but unfortunately I don't have that opportunity. I have on the other hand put my monitors on the best possible spot, with the eq-setting appropiate for my room. That will have to do it for now.

Also RAMI, I sense that maybe you're not able to contribute anything in this thread. Find someone else to help will you? :D

Actually, aside from a few harmless jokes by a few of us that weren't directed at you or anyone else for that matter, I did contribute by asking you what kind of room treatment you did or didn't have. In fact, it's probably the most important part of getting to any level, let alone the "next" level. I guess it's not what you wanted to hear (there seems to be an epidemic of that lately) because you said you WON'T do it. That's why I said it's not worth asking you why, you seemed to have your mind made up. I never implied you were stupid, but it seems I didn't have to. You made that pretty clear all by yourself.

Attaboy!!!!

:D

Thank you for your time and advice, I won't need your help anymore!

That is actually quite sad, because all of this is help. Even if you find offense to the joking or maybe took offense to some humor between members here, nobody was steering you wrong.

Welcome to the internet/world where everyone doesn't have the same life, set of morals, or ability to stroke you when you need it most.

When you post a comment on a world wide forum, expect to take what you need from the advice given. It not always going to be what you want to hear, and not always in the way you wish to hear it.

I will say, you got nothing but good advice so far. I may have said it nicer myself, but that is just me. I'm a tame moderator dood. Well, until someone pisses me off-then I am just a member with an attitude.

You need to start listening to the advice, and not take offense to the way it is presented. Just my suggestion.

Welcome to the forum Jon. Seriously, chill and learn from those who do. Most of us are not teachers, we just express what we have learned from doing. :)

You mean you're not worthy of my help any more. You obviously don't know good advice when you read it. Your loss, dude.

Go get 'em Tiger.

Yeah, I don't see one thing I said that was "not nice". I see a cocaine joke based on him using the word "freebasing". I see 4 or 5 other members making the same amount of HARMLESS jokes as I did as far as "encouraging noobs". Weird. I don't know what's happened to this place, but it seems to be attracting the most sissified, over-sensitive, lack of humor bunch of babies ever. I'm not blaming this place obviously, I guess the world has just become humorless and.........stupid. Pretty sad.

I also see a noob who posted a question about how to get to the "next level", which I assume means "How can I improve my results?". This OP was then steered towards the question of room treatment, to which he responded, not only that he didn't have any room treatment, but that he WON'T do it. He then made a dumb-ass comment about not turning his studio into "Abbey Road Studios", which is totally ignorant since room treatment doesn't involve anything that expensive or strenuous. So, he asked a question, got an answer, rejected that answer without any knowledge of what that answer actually entails, and then got all snarky . So, one can only conclude from this that the OP doesn't want real help. He was hoping to get one of those "magic bullets secret answers" that don't exist. At that point, it was obvious to me, even if nobody else caught on to it, that trying to help this moron would be a total waste of time.

We need to administer a "How easily do you get sand in your vagina?" test to first-time posters. True story.

OP:

You can do it!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Jimmy for your this life lesson, I will bear that in mind for the rest of my life. And thank you for welcoming me to the internet world, i just got online, like last week or so. Haven't had time yet to see how it works. It's so cool that you are this nice and relaxed even though I'm a stupid, sad, over-sensitive person infecting your beloved forum. Im so happy that you're not pissed off for this, i wouldn't wanna see that!
