Monitors setup help

Hi, my names Jack.

So recently i tried setting up my studio monitors but I've had a little problem. When I plug everything in any try play any sound threw them, it just sounds like very quiet and high frequency only. The monitors are Yamaha MSP7's, male XLR cable to male 1/4 into a M-Audio M-Track audio interface that goes into my computer.

The Monitors are fairly new, and i hope to god they aren't broken because it would have been my last room mates fault DJing like a twat on them.

The only other thing i can think of is that they aren't suitable for the XLR>1/4 cables?

Thoughts on what i shall do?

Are cables "Tip, Ring, Sleeve" jacks, i.e. "stereo"? If not this could be your problem they might be miswired and not picking up the hot side from the M-Audio jacks.

However, from your description I fear that "mate" might have buggered them. Low, squeaky sound could be blown LF amps, speakers or both. However, try a "Wet Finger Test. .....N, VERY BLOODY B!!! What follows is ONLY to be used in THIS circumstance!!! You have been warned!!

Hold the jack end of a cable by the insulation,NOT the metal plug body and set the monitor VC to say 25%. Wet finger on other hand and touch it momentarily to the tip of the jack. You should hear a buzz. If not or not sure advance VC to 50% and try again. Still nowt? Try the other lead. Note, if they ARE TRS jacks try a wet digit on the ring. If this buzzes and not the tip the leads are miswired. If properly wired you should get a buzz on both tip and ring. Note, the buzz should be quite "hearty" not just a squeak!

Those Yamahas have XLR input. Perhaps you mean 1/4"-XLR? It helps to think in terms of the signal path order. Are the 1/4" ends TS or TRS? The interface has TRS output so a TRS-XLR cable would be the best option.
 
Just tried the wet finger on the very tip of the jack and it was still very low volume and the high buzz. Also I was using TS jacks so you were both right. :(

New cables, and is it possible to get the speakers fixed? Whats the usual price and who fixes them? :S

Woah! Those cables COULD be miswired but it is frankly unlikely. Given your suspicions re damage try to find some one who can properly test cables or monitors before you splash out on new leads. The monitors SHOULD work with TS plugs.

Don't suppose you have a testmeter at all?

Do you get bass if you only turn one monitor on? you could have the monitors out of phase with some wiring issue.
