Mic Hum xlr vs 1/4"

Hi I'm new to this group. Thought you geeks may be able to help. I am recording vocals using a SM58 into a focusrite 6i6 and Sonar X2. Initially I used an XLR cable but noticed an excess hum in the recording. I thought I may have a ground loop. Tried everything but no cancelling the noise. I finally decided to change the mic cable to a 1/4" and the hum disappeared. In both cases the focusrite was set to INST for input (has a line option too). Why am I getting the hum when using the XLR cable?

Thank you. I tried both input options with the XLR and it makes no difference. It still hums.
 
I dunno....check the cable...check your connections....try both channels of the interface....plug it into some other AC outlet....etc...etc.

It should not hum.

It almost passeth understanding that the SM57 is faulty and it would be almost as unlikely that BOTH mic inputs on the AI would be duff.
That just leaves the XLR cable, it has probably lost the pin one earth (aka ground) connection .

GET A FEKKIN' DIGITAL MULTIMETER!! And I don't just mean noobs!

6i6 should automatically detect XLR/TRS/TS, yes? If your INST light is on, you are in unbalanced mode and will get hum. Look around the Scarlett Mix Control software for something. Possibly bad XLR cable not tripping the INST off?
No experience with this unit other than seeing it used and knowing they have a software control.
