I'm trying to record out of a Roland TD-7 brain to my new Tascam 1800. I've read all the setup treads and believe I have it all hooked up right but can't get any audio out to either my speakers or the headphone output on the 1800... Help!!

Are you planning on recording individual parts to the 1800 or just the stereo out? That will make a difference in what tracks you setup and stuff.

Here is a basic setup plan for the 1800 and Cubase that I copied from another thread I responded to asking similar. Keep in mind the VST connections may be different depending on how you plan to record the Roland.

You must first select the 1800 in Cubase. Devices>Device Setup...VST Audio System. In the drop down menu at top, select 'US-1800'. While on that page, check the 'Release Driver' box. This will allow the 1800 to play WMP, Youtube, whatever, while Cubase is open.

Now, go to Devices>VST Connections (F4 shortcut). Add a mono input bus. You will need to create a input bus for each input needed from the 1800. For each input bus created, you will left click on the 'Device Port' column (highlighted in yellow), and select the input channel of the 1800 that you wish to use. Leave the default Stereo output bus.

Now, create a track to record to. Project>Add Track>Audio>Mono.

In the 'Inspector' window at the left of the main project window, look for a symbol that looks kinda like this: >] SEE ATTACHMENT

This is where you select the bus you created in VST Connections. You will change this on each track that is using a different input channel on the 1800.

If you don't see the symbol, click on the track name at the top of the Inspector window to pull to the main Inspector screen.

You will need to also toggle the monitor button on the track to hear the input (it looks like a side view of a speaker). Toggle it back off to hear playback.
--to make this toggle automatically; File>Preferences>VST. In the Auto Monitoring drop down menu, select Tapemachine Style.

Let me know if this gets you up and running.

Also, make sure the Monitor knob on the 1800 is fully clockwise to hear playback from Cubase.

Jimmy thx for answering - I read a lot of your posts previously which help a lot already - I was able to hook up a mike to the 1st xlr input and get recorded input and output to my monitors - I am still dead in the water though in trying to get the the the TD7 to work; using the stereo outs only to inputs 9&10 set for guitar - I setup the tracks the way you suggested but I still get no input from the drum brain...

Sorry for the delay. Damn day job. lol

Ok, make sure in VST Connections, to create a 'Stereo Input Bus'. Inputs>Add Bus>Configuration (Stereo). Hit the 'plus sign' next to the stereo bus you created. In the yellow highlighted area you will select input 9 for left, and input 10 for right. Make sure to name this bus something you remember, in case there is a default one. Or just change the input channels for that. Just trying to give a direct way to create one...

Now just create a stereo audio track: Project>Add Track>Audio>Configuration Stereo>Add Track. In the 'Inspector' select the stereo input bus you created. Hit the record enable button on the track and the monitor button. If your Roland does not give you signal, then something is likely wrong with output settings of the Roland.

Try that and come back with your results. :)

Jimmy - I got it - it was having the Performance Pad plugged in to the Aux In of the TD7 - I had to come out of the Headphone Out of the TD7 to get the Performance Pad pass thru to the 1800 - if I'm saying that right... :)

I checked out a few of your tunes on your site - nice - I have a friend in Denver who goes out under the name StrangeByrds - Ray Smith - killer guitar player... Seen him? - he was in an early 70's fusion band Flying Island on Blue Note that was something else - Cheers! :)

Hey Jimbo - check out the first effort - thx again for the help!! :)

Go to Lazybonzband on Youtube... Grand Poobah...!

Hey, sounds like you have been at this a while! :) Is that you playing with the band as well? Good stuff man.

I have heard of Ray Smith, but I don't get out too often anymore. Family and shiz.

Glad you got it figured out man. It usually ends up being the simple things that create the most havoc...

:D

I hear you about the family - have a six year old boy who means the world to me - but still manage to gig out once or twice a month - part of this experiment is tied in with a project I'm hopefully about to launch - wish me luck - lazybonzcorp dot com :)

Have you had any luck with selling samples...?

Luck to you! You have much energy left.

Selling samples? Not sure I know what you mean.

I record bands, collaborate and play drums and/or bass with bands, and mix bands from all over. I have never 'sold a sample'. My website is only there to show what I have done in my studio with my friends and collaborators. I don't have my studio for income. Maybe a retirement plan for the future...It is far from being worthy of a worthy income IMO. $20 an hour for an occasional project does not even pay for the gear I buy every week or so. That is what my other business does. It pays for my love of music and my fam to have what they need. Or I am just a washed up musician that has become a recording geek with a hobby. Who cares. I am happy and so is my family and those that come to my home to record.

By samples I mean trying to sell 2-3 minute beds like on Soundclick. The field looks pretty crowded

You're preaching to the choir about playing music for just about break even. I mo. to the LA area in 79. Played the Whisky Roxy Troubadour a hundred times trying to get a record deal. Kept playing in cover bands just for the love of it and now delving into this recording with pretty much the same realization of outcome.

On another note I'm getting major spikes when I'm recording and playbacks from something in the loop of my gear. Any good way to analyze where exactly that's coming from?

Yeah, back in the 90's I thought I was going to be a rock star. Even played at Mile High Stadium once opening for REO Speedwags, Damn Yankees,... That sure didn't pan out like I thought. Oh well, many great memories. :)

Do you mean some sort of signal spike or ASIO spike? Post up a sample of the spikes if it is audio. You only need 3 more posts to be able to do that.
