Is there any love here (or otherwise) for Fostex monitors/speakers? I don't see much mention of them.
Thank you.

Most people will probably tell you they are good for beginners or as a secondary set of monitors. For me, they are kind of like the M-Audio line.

Thank you.

Keep in mind, you can still use them to mix with. Any monitor speaker is capable if you learn how they translate. The issue lies in how much time you have to spend cross-checking your mixes on other systems.

Through my experiences, I would not waste money on anything that didn't have an 8" driver nor would I spend less than $500 a pair for new monitors. Purchasing used monitors are the way I have saved money.

And also, proper room treatment will cut the time you need to check yourself in half. Also less expensive if you have some DIY skill.

I upgraded from the KRK G2 6" monitors to the Fostex PM641s a month or two ago, and I'm loving it. The KRKs were great too, but the Fostex sound a heck of a lot clearer and just overall more accurate to me. I got them for like $300 on sale though. If they'd been regular price, I wouldn't have gone with them though and would have picked up a used pair of something nicer. But they are good :)

I don't like fostex monitors much, they are quite accurate but not in the low mids and bass end. My friend used to have some (we are talking 10-15 years ago) and they truly sucked, but the newer ones might be improved. You might want to try looking into Equator E5's, as they are supposed to be very good and very accurate.

Yeah, I think the smaller Fostex monitors like the 6.5" and the 5" struggle with accurate bass reproduction, but no more than similar monitors of other brands would do as well. If one got the PM841's for example, I think they'd sound quite nice. Like Jimmy said, an 8" driver is a great starting point when looking to buy new monitors.
