I'll take the Sex Pistols over the Ramones and the Clash.
Now you're just talking crazy.
I'll take the Sex Pistols over the Ramones and the Clash.
I knew that would get your attention Greg! LOL!
You're one of those guys.
The Beatles are a strange one. I always figured there's too much variety there to flat out dislike them, but each to his own.
I like some of their catalog, but you can guarantee it won't be from the early days.
Some old bitch had a go at me at a party a while back cos I was wearing a Beatles tshirt (that someone else bought me!).
She was all like, "I bet you can't name ten Beatles albums."
Funny thing is
A: I can...
B: 9 of them are shit.
I wouldn't give a shit if Jesus himself covered a hendrix song. He was a sloppy blues player. He just did it really loudly.Like I said, I was never a Hendrix fanatic and to this day, I've never learned any Hendrix riffs....BUT....I still think he was innovative and certainly had flash AFA guitar playing goes, and I really like some of his songs.
I was talking about big name guys like SRV, Clapton, Beck and a slew of others who respected Hendrix and also covered his songs.
That many great players wouldn't give him that much rep if he was only a "sloppy blues player".....just sayin'......
Their later stuff on the other hand.....
For me, age and era has nothing to do with it. Some of my favorite music is from the 50s and 60s. History and hindsight is a useful tool. What did Hendrix actually do? Really? He was a sloppy blues player. I don't get it, and don't even care to get it. His music is unlistenable to me. I give him credit for one thing - playing super loud. He put the Marshall stack on the map, but really, Pete Townshend and John Entwistle did it before Hendrix. Maybe if they were black hippie junkies they would have gotten more credit for it.
I agree with all of that. I'm a huge Hendrix fan and the only time I ever heard him play sloppy was on some live stuff. His studio stuff is awesome and never sloppy at all, and very little of it is bluesy. Of corse, all rock is based on blues to some extent, so we can nit-pick on how bluesy anything is. His playing on "Watchtower" is probably in my top 3 of any guitar song ever.''
First off lemme say that all this stuff is matter of taste. I don't get the idea that if you don't care for someone's music you have to HATE it and them.
I don't like a single thing I've ever heard by the Clash but I don't hate them. They've just never 'touched' me in any way. I also don't like Springsteen but I don't 'like' his music . not hate it.
I truly don't get that.
As for Hendrix being a blues player ..... only people who aren't at all familiar with his music say that. Like him or not ..... the common comment that he was just a blues player is patently absurd.
'Burning of the Midnight Lamp' doesn't even come close to being blues.
'If 6 Were 9' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Axis Bold as Love' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Manic Depression' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Waterfall' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Purple Haze' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Angel' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Castles Made of Sand' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Dolly Dagger' doesn't comes close to being blues.
'Driftin' doesn't come close to being blues.
'Gypsy Eyes' doesn't come close to being blues.
'House Burning Down' doesn't come close to being blues.
'One Rainy Wish' doesn't come close to being blues.
I could easily add another 20 songs on there ..... these are many of his best works and none of them are remotely blues.
In fact ....... the ONLY actual straight out blues song I can think of that he ever recorded was Red House.
Hell, one of the reasons people think he was blues is 'cause a real blues loser, SRV, played a couple of his songs.
So now people think of Little Wing as a blues song which it really isn't.
So like him or not, the characterization of Hendrix as a blues player is simply wrong.
SRV is player that I don't like ...... but I don't like his music and/or playing ...... that's not the same as hating him.
I don't get why people have to go for hating someone if they don't care for their music.
Plus tastes change ..... you never know what you'll suddenly like or dislike as time goes by.
There was a time when I'd have bet you money that there was no chance I'd ever like The Ramones ...... ever ....... I found their brand of "playing" to be pure garbage.
Then someone took the time to educate me about them and I saw what was important and good about their playing and now I like them ..... they even make my rotation list in the truck along with Greg's latest disc which is bad ass.
I think most of the time if you 'hate' a particular music it's more because you don't know as much about it as you think you do.
.
It doesn't bother me but you obviously don't really know his music anymore than I did the Ramones. I thought I did and couldn't stand them.I don't hate Hendrix. He's dead. He died before I was born. I didn't know the guy. I do hate his music. His music exemplifies all of the things I don't like in rock music. It's slow, and wanky, and sloppy, and show-offy, and I just hear sloppy bluesy crap being banged out and it's usually mostly uninteresting people that eat it up. It's music for guitar players, and all of those "legends" from the 60s were essentially just playing amped up blues licks. Hell, pretty much all rock and roll is just amped up blues licks. I'll never be convinced differently. I didn't just recently become aware of Hendrix. Lol. I've had a long time to form my opinions. If that means that I appear to not know otherwise, that's fine too. I know I'm in the minority. I don't really expect any fans of Hendrix to understand what I'm saying or where I come from. I know that it often drives guitar players literally insane that I'd dare talk shit about hendrix music. Same with beatles people. Someone has got to speak up against the madness. I'll wave that flag.![]()
It doesn't bother me but you obviouysly don't really know his music anymore than I did the Ramones.
Most of it is NOT blues or bluesy first.
And a lot of it could NOT be called slow.
But stick with your prejudices, you are entitled to them. ....... glad I wasn't so stubborn about the Ramones though.![]()
That sounds reasonable.I don't know his music down to the molecule. I don't need to. I know that what I hear I don't like. Like I said, I didn't just hear hendrix for the fist time the other day. I've been hearing that mess for a long time. I've never liked it. I can't get with it. I didn't latch on in my formative years, and I don't latch on now. It doesn't impress me, move me, inspire me....in fact, it does just the opposite. I don't need to know every song from every album to know that I don't like it. I don't know every cut from Kanye Wests's new album. I know I don't like it. It's not just me being prejudiced. You know the kind of music I like and play, would you really expect someone like me to like hendrix? I wouldn't!
I'm glad you took the time to try to get into the Ramones, and I was happy to help you with that, but I wouldn't think any less of you if you hated them. Same with Rami. Or anyone else. I don't think any less of you guys for liking the beatles or hendrix or pink floyd or any of the stuff I typically don't like. The stuff I like is not for everyone. And in fact, the Ramones and the Clash are some of those bands that a lot of people like because they think they're supposed to. So most of my animosity is more towards fans of these kinds of bands as opposed to the bands themselves. I don't hate Paul McCartney. I hate the guy that wears a beatles shirt and goes on about how they're the greatest band ever while not being able to name more than a few hit songs. It's just weird to me. Pretty lame.
Wow! I had to Google "Inner Light". Never heard it before, and I thought I know every single thing the Beatles did. It was a B-Side to "Lady Madonna", and not on any album, it seems. Yes, less haunting than the others he did.Or Revolution 9
But yes, I totally agree with you too, I was just doing really heavy generalizing. With The Beatles is different from Help which is different from Rubber Soul which is different from Magical Mystery Tour which is different from Let it Be. And there's some albums which have such a variety of music on them, such as Pepper's, or Abbey Road, or the obvious, The White Album.
Never got the 'weird George sitar' songs. The Inner Light is a gorgeous song, probably one of their most beautiful, it doesn't have the 'haunting' qualities that Love You Too or Within You Without You have.
That sounds reasonable.
Bands rock. People suck.
That sounds reasonable.I hate you fuckers for more important reasons that that.![]()
