TASCAM US-1800 issues

does anyone else use this interface and have trouble recording direct in from an amp, or line6 PodHD500 and end up with extremely distorted audio tracks??? plugging a guitar straight into a 1/4" input sounds clean, but when using the XLR inputs in a stereo setup, it sounds terrible...haha.. I just bought this interface yesterday and I really need to get this thing working! Thanks
 
Inputs 9/10 are for guitar and Line In. The guitar is a Hi-Z input while the amp is putting out a Line Level voltage. For sure that's what he's doing wrong. (Didn't read the manual!!)
