Which version to purchase..

I've been playing around with logic pro for a while now and had a quick go on pro tools for a few weeks while i was away.

I've gotta say i much prefer Pro Tools, if im honest i got Pro Tools 8 HD which does fine for the editing.
Since ive come home and wanted to use it to record, I've had a terrible monitoring problem.

All i have to do is open Pro tools, not even create a session and I can hear sound of my inputs through the output.

I have a UA-25ex I/O so

E.g i have a mic pluged into input 1, i can hear the mic through the left side of my output, input 2 = right side. But still no session even opened.

I've tried making the input/output devices different, still the same problem, I've read a few latency problems on here but i suspect this is something different as none of the solutions I've read seem to work/help

Any ideas?

Its a friends software and i havent had to purchase a copy for myself atm. So my next question is,
What version is best for me? I will only be recording Vocals, Possible a piano or guitar as well, but all at seperate times.

Any suggestions on packaged to buy with pro tools & interfaces would be appreciated. Living In UK

Hey.
I don't know that UA interface but if you can hear audio without even opening a session, it must have its own software with monitoring/routing options.

I have a motu 828 mk2 and I can go into the motu software, lift the faders, and monitor my inputs without opening PT.
It's usually a feature to provide zero latency monitoring whilst recording.

If in your case PT must be open, maybe it's a feature of HD that I'm not aware of.

Thats what im trying to avoid, i want it off, i only want to be able to hear the input when i record enable the channel and record something through it, not all the time..
 
It's you can permanently hear your inputs even with PT completely shutdown then it's probably some software like that.
If it only happens when PT is open then it's either a feature of HD or a glitch in your copy.

I don't know anything about the quality of that edirol, but it looks very similar to the presonus firestudio mobile that I usually recommend.
I guess it's probably fine.

Pro tools 9, 10 and 11 aren't limited to avid/digidesign/maudio interfaces so if you get one of those you'll be ready to go.

Protools have an amnesty policy. If you bought and registered PT9 today they'd upgrade you to 10 (11 when it's out) for free.
Based on that just get the cheapest PT 9,10 or 11 you can find.
If you're a student (or know a student) you can get some cracking deals.

Having said all that, I'd definitely encourage you to download and try Reaper.
It's a preference thing when all's said and done but Reaper's cheap and very capable.

so if i bought pro tools 9 now, id get 10 for free, but if i bought 10 now id get 11 for free when it comes out? or could i get 9 then upgrade to 11? ha
 
Yeah, that's exactly right. Please do your research to be 100% certain, but that's how it worked when I registered V8.
9 was just out at the time and I got an email with details of my free upgrade.

AVID do publish the dates and info.

Check the DUC to be sure, but since Avid went to native software, the freebie upgrades are no longer. You get a discount, but still have to pay the cross-grade price ($200-300 US) to upgrade beyond PT 9.0.
 
The amnesty upgrades are still in place. They're just not as generous as they used to be.

Looking into it, I may be wrong about PT11.
Sounds like if you buy 9/10 once pt 11 is out you'll get the upgrade.
There used to be a 30 day grace period or something like that.

Here's a discussion about it.

100% do the research before buying though. Better safe than sorry.
 
You definitely should check Presonus stuff. The StudioOne is really intuitive and complete with a lot of plugins. If you buy the interface, the DAW is for free.
 
DAWs -

For DAWs I have PT8LE, PT10, Studio One, and Grageband. Out of those I prefer Pro Tools 10: I'm used to it (PT8 remember), but the Presonus' Studio One is not a bad alternative either. I just have to learn a new work flow to make things happen in S1. From what little tinkering I've done with it, Studio One seems like a more advance/capable version of Garage Band. If you chose S1 I don't think you'd have many complaints as it does feel pretty solid. I just like Pro Tools. It's my "comfy jeans" DAW.


PT11? -

I went from PT8 to PT10 (via $400 download), and yes I have a free upgrade waiting for me in my Avid Account. Going to 11 looks like it has a potential techno domino effect. You have to be 64 bit compatible (no problem) and PT11 will use their new plugs format which is supposed to be amazing and cut your CPU usage in half. The problem? It not going to support RTAS anymore (not 100% on that) but in addition, nobody makes plug-ins for the new format yet. 8-\

So at this point I've already accomplished my main upgrading goal of no longer requiring a Digidesign/M-Audio interface. Task complete. PT11? Maybe someday, but no hurry.


Interfaces -

I'm using a Presonus AudioBox 1818vsl as my primary interface, but I do have the Eleven Rack as well. I chose the Presonus for its 8 XLR inputs for recording my drumset, along with its Studio Live Fat Channel Processing, and it fits in a rack instead of on my desk. With the built in processing you also get zero latency effects in your headphones while tracking. This is very nice for tracking vocals.

With my old Roland XP-80 going into Ch1&2, I have the outputs of the Eleven Rack going into Ch3&4 of the interface. It works quite nicely. I did try running both interfaces at the same time, but PT doesn't want to play that way. No Biggie. So guitar -> 11R -> Presonus -> iMac -> HS80's = :D

So PT10 + Presonus

I hope (for my own sake) that I'm right, but many manufacturers currently make AAX plugs, and many of the rest are aiming to have AAX released in time for PT11s release.

I don't for one second expect it to be a seamless transition, but the PT world is acting like PT 11 will be totally useless because no one's ever going to make AAX plugs.

One thing I've learned about avid/digidesign is to wait....and wait.......and wait.
There's no point speculating.

Waves and McDSP have issued a statement saying they aim to release AAX in time for PT11, and even if they don't, pt11 owners will get a 10 license to tide them over.
I haven't looked into any other manufacturers but I imagine it's pretty standard.

Yes, I understand that PT11 will work fine and that 3rd party plugin companies will be making plugs for it (they'd be stupid not to), but for the moment I'm happy with PT10 and have no "Oh I gotta get that!" thing going on about PT11. Like I said I have the license for PT11 waiting in my AVID account, but I'm in no rush to use it just yet. Will I? For sure, why wouldn't I (free money more or less), but I'm in no hurry.

I'm just not an upgrade simply because there's something "newer and shinier" available kind of guy. That's all. :thumbs up:

Out of interest, does that PT11 license currently show up in your account?

Yes, my AVID account shows the license for PT11. It's just sitting there and chillin' for now.

I have both PRO Tools 10 and Sonar X2 Producer. For me, I use a lot of plug-ins & midi so my 'go to' DAW is Sonar X2 for its simplicity. I've heard/read where some people believe PRO Tools is the better of the two in terms of sound quality but in side by side tests I've found that to be nothing more than urban legend.

I hate avid.....:facepalm:

I had to twist their arm to give me PT10 despite entitlement, and apparently now I'll have to twist their arm for PT11.
I have a registration confirmation email with PT10 purchase date shown as 04/24/13.

Their site says
"Get a complimentary Pro Tools 11 upgrade (once it’s available) when you buy, upgrade, or crossgrade to Pro Tools 10 on or after April 7, 2013 and register your purchase."

Who knows; Maybe they'll surprise me.

I'm inclined to ignore anyone who says a daw sounds better than another.

I'm sure on some minute level there may be differences in how DAWs process audio (maybe not!?) but even so is it going to be heard?
There's just so much more to address that will improve your sound quality...The DAW is the last thing you should worry about if at all.
(not aiming that at you Lambo).

It stands to reason that the stock plugs can be preferred from DAW to DAW, or the workflow, but to say Protools sounds better than anything else just seems like clutching at straws to me.
