who's ready to listen to 2000+ versions of the same song!!!!!!!
yeaaaaa, that must be a treat.

Can anyone help me . I cant get my mix to sound cloud. I think sound cloud is down? Bummer I need to get this mix up by today!!!!

Hi all fellow Mixers!
Here is my baby. Hope it sounds good to your hears too.

Good Luck!

Apologies if I won't go into great details, but it would take ages to explain why I did what. If anybody has any question in regards feel free to get in touch!

I've had the luxury to borrow some outboard and finish the mix off with some good speakers (NS10 and Adam S3A). I Used Pro Tools 10 with an apogee Rosetta.
Here is a list of gear and plugs used on each track in the same order as per chain:

Lead Vox:
Waves Rcomp - Waves Req to filter below 93, cut at 390 and 794 - Hardware LA-2A - Hardware SSL E EQ. FXs: UAD 140 Plate - one of the million rooms in Altiverb - Some very subtle distortion in the choruses with DevilLoc and an Echoboy 1/4 Delay on some lines only.

Drums:
I "reinforced" kick and snare with some samples, on both I used only a Waves API EQ and sent them to a Drums bus.

Over Heads:
Waves Q1 to cut at 162 and 500 - UAD Helios EQ to boost in the snare area - UAD SPL Twin Tube to add some saturation and harmonic enhancement at 2K - Waves De Esser to try keeping down the harshness of the cymbals.

Drums Bus: (No parallel compression)
Hardware SSL G EQ - Hardware SSL Comp FXs: Altiverb Room with a Waves Q1 to cut at 522.

Bass:
Waves REQ with a HiPass Filter at 30hz - One Knob Driver - Hardware SSL E EQ - Hardware SSL Comp

E GTR:
Re-amped with Guitar Rig - UAD Elios EQ with a boost at 10K - Waves REQ with a cut around 3.3K - Hardware SSL G EQ - Hardware SSL Comp. FXs: Altiverb Room (same one as the vox) - Echoboy 1/8 Delay

Master Bus:
Hardware API 2500 Compressor - Hardware Manley Massive Passive with boosts at 47Hz, 270Hz, 3.3K, 12k. Once the mix was printed back in pro tools I used a Massey limiter for some gentle limiting for some extra glue and a UAD Brainworx digital only to widen the mix and "mono up" everything below 80hz.

Replying to Jimmy O,

Go to your uploadpage on sound cloud, under the file you uploaded you will see a button called groups click on that and if you tagged your file with the gearfest tag you should see that group as an option. Click the gearfest group and it will show up on the Gearfest group page.

Good luck!

Actually the soundcloud convertor keeps more of the sonic integrity of your track when it converts a 16 bit file. And obviously it will play a better sound as well.

But in the case of this competition, from what I have read, the hosts will "download" the files and listen to them, so you don't need to worry as they will download your original 24bit file. (I hope that soundcloud keeps the uploaded file intact)

That's exactly what i meant. Sorry if i came off rude.

OK....I was able get my mix posted, so I guess the contest still has not offically closed.

Mixing was done OTB for the most part. Playback from my DAW out to a console and various outboard gear.

The basic chains:
Kick - applied some EQ at the console to cut back the hard boom, and make it more of a fat thud.
Snare - applied EQ to remove some of the High Hat, then out to a limiter just to tame the tops a bit.
Drum OH - applied EQ to sort out the Hats and overall drum sound, then out to a comp for dynamics shaping.
Bass DI - some EQ for tone shaping.
Bass Mic - some EQ for tone shaping.
Guitar - applied EQ and also added a limiter just to tighten it up a bit.
Vocals - applied EQ for tone shaping.
Overall, there is a Plate reverb on the tracks in varying degrees. Stereo Bus had an Overstayer Stereo VCA comp and Nightpro EQ3D, which then went to an Otari MX5050 BIII 1/4" 2-track for the mixdown, and from there back to the DAW for final digital stereo WAV file. Added to that was just a touch of Waves L2 for final dynamics.

Equipment includes:
AD&R F601-RS Limiter
Overstayer FET comp and Stereo VCA comp.
Nightpro EQ3D
CLM Dynamics DB500 Dynamic EQ
....and a few other pieces.

Here is my PureMix GearFest Mixing Contest entry:

I used Studio One V2.5.

Plugins were Waves and some Studio One standard plugins as well. I used Melodyne on the vocal.

I think that it will be very easy for the PUREMIX TEAM to spot the best mixes, HOW?

Simply go to the first CHORUS and eliminate all the people who didn't fix(got rid of) the resonant feedback sound. I Don't think any professional engineer or real mixing enthusiast would leave such a mistake in a record. :spank:

Here you go, easy to separate the men from the kids, and easily more than 2000 amateurs eliminated :guitar:

man, there are so many resonances in this track... for sure you didn't tame all of them

I did :)

Engineers are not paid to leave resonances in a mix :D

But the one at the start of the first chorus is a blunt ugly one and even my grandma can hear how awful it sounds :D :)

did you get the one on the OH track, at 3:52, at 4400 Hz & 4864 Hz?

Yups but I thought I was rather pretty(it sounded more metallic and special than anything), and it wasn't ear piercing, so I controlled it a bit and left it alone :)

By the way I absolutely love the balance of your mix, and u're one of the rare guys who had a beautiful high end instead of a washy amateurish high end.

Also the belting out on the last chorus specially at 3:31 ... amazing energy!!

Seriously one of the best I heard out there (and i'm not saying it to be nice) ;)

Woow, man your kind words directly touch me. There are so many hype mixes out there, at the end you don't even know if what you did is good or bad :) But yes I did want this song to be full of energy, hopefully it was a success.

Btw I'd be glad to listen to your mix ;) Where is it?
