Do people sing live using mic preamps?

Just curious if there's any down side to this practice. Cuz I only hear preamps in home or studio recordings.

Mostly people don't use external mic preamps live except occasionally for the "money channel". Technically, the mic inputs on a mixer are preamps.

You hear a pre amp on every single microphone you've ever listened to--no exceptions. As bouldersoundguy says, every mic input into a mixer contains a pre-amp--and, when you get up the the quality of mixer used on big tours, they're darn good pre amps too.

That said, it's certainly not unheard of for some performers to have a specific favourite mic pre amp they take with with so the get the same sound whatever mixer is being used at their gig.

Thx. I meant dedicated external preamp. U know what I mean!

When sound guys go to hell they have to mic satans un-tuned drum set. And satan is one of those drummers who likes to do drum solos while the sound guy is setting up mics.

Satan also refuses to use moon-gel-duct or duct tape on his shitty drums....."use a gate ass-hole" is his response when you ask.

Im not sure why I typed this?

P.S. Satan is also an expert in breaking the end off every 57 you have on his shitty drumset.

I bet he bashes the hi hat.

This is gona end up being a new thread : HR's pet hates.

Wrong. You don't get 57's in Hell. You have to do it all with AKG C1000S's, all the cables are bad, the mics are wireless with no shielding. Backup is done with accordions, bagpipes, and bullroarers. The doo-wah section is made up of the people who washed out at American Idol auditions. I've heard Old Scratch is a pretty good fiddle player, though.

What Bobbsy says ^^^

But also, live performance venues are not the best acoustic spaces. When you couple the challenges of mixing in them with the ambient noise of the audience, the subtleties of using an external preamp are likely to be lost. There's not much to be gained.

That's cool. Heaven is where all the Anti-Loudness Bozos are going. Send me to hell, please. :D

the end is nigh!

There are a few acts that I work with that I bring external preamps to shows - only to get a different edge on the lead vocalist. These are usually high energy bands and need the vocal up and over the top.
