I Got What I Asked For.. jazzy - bluesy pop song - Mix opinions please!

This is the first mix of this, would like some opinions.. Vocal is me, it's all I've got, so can't improve that much! ;) How does the mix sound??

 
Now that I listen again, the vocal seems too quiet.. Is the link working?
 
I think it's well balanced and everything sounds pretty good to me. Vocal level seems fine. Guitars and keys sound really good. Well done.
 
You're smarter than me, coming up with stuff like this. The vocal:

* a dB louder, or...

* a bit more parallel compression, or...

* copy the track twice, pan it hard left and right with the same effects as the center panned vocal, so that it's shooting right out of the monitors like the stuff that's panned left and right, rather than just being 'imaged' in the center.

Great tune.
 
Hmm.. I always use parallel compression on the drums, but never on the vocal yet.. will have to try it! Thanks for comments!
 
If you try the parallel compression thing on vocal, beware sibilance - it can bring it out. I don't have a plugin for dealing with that, but I think it's about time.
 
Excellent production here. this mix has kind of a 70's feel to it (Atlanta rhythm section kind of sound) I would raise the vocal level slightly and give the overall mix just a little bit more "air" (high end). Great song my friend. :)

Not sure I understood this. Are you saying to make two copies of the original vocal, pan the copies hard L and R and then apply the same effects to them as the original (centered) track? That would just, in effect, turn up the volume of the vocal by 6dbs (?) or so. Unless I'm off.

I thought the mix sounded pretty good.

My only nits would be personal preferences. I'm used to a "weaker" bass on tunes like this. This had a bass powerful enough for a mainstream pop song. I'd back off the lows on the bass and maybe turn it down a nudge.

I tend to like things dryer. I didn't care for the "heav-ish" reverb.

Some real good lead guitar playing.

Overall real nice.

A bit different EQ is all or a tiny touch of distortion maybe. You have to make sure that the overall vocal level is right. But I get this impression time and again that the vocal (which is almost always panned center) is sometimes not as present as the stuff that's panned left and right and coming right out of the speaker instead of being 'imaged' in the center. I read it somewhere and I've tried it a couple of times and convinced myself it makes a difference.

It's working very well IMO and sounds good... You can keep fiddling if you like, but you probably have other songs that really need more work.
 
Great tune. I sense a lot of Steely Dan influence. They'd blow this song up!

Enjoyed the mix. Me, personally, I'd likely apply a little high-end compression just to give it a little mellower, smoother feel. But that's totally a taste thing. Really very well done.

Damn, this is the best thing I have heard in a long time. The Rhodes is very cool.
If you could get the Memphis Horns to do some fills and stabs this would be a heart stopper.
I'm gushing, the composition is so good.
I mean hell yeah!

click on the word "other" in my post #13 and you go to a shure add. While I have nothing against shure... I sure as hell don't recommend any particular equipment and had nothing to do with that link.

In fact, my view is that many musicians are sucked into buying far more equipment than they need.
