Hey guys,

Need some advice please. I have a Fostex DMT-8vl into which i'm recording the output from various things like my Alesis SR-16, electric guitar and bass. The DMT-8 vl come equiped with input channel 1 and 2 with input level switches to connect low output divices to. Currently i'm having to record my SR-16 into these channels as recording directly into the other channels the volume is too low.

Does anyone know of a bit of kit i can use to up the volume into other channels direct from the drum machine? At the mo i'm stuck with the whole ping pong method which i a ball ache.

I've been looking at preamps but they all say they are for microphones? Can the take line instrument inputs?

Have also looked at DI boxes but not sure if these will ramp up the volume and most i'm looking at are sporting XLR outputs but alas the DMT-8vl doesn't have XLR input terminals. Can i plug and XLR to jack into an essentially mono/line input?

Cheers

Chuck :-)

Preamps will give you what you need: gain. Many mic preamps double as instrument preamps.

DIs let you send an instrument signal down a long line to a mic preamp. That could be handy at some point but I don't think it's what you need right now.

I'm not familiar with the gear, but looking at the Fostex manual, it shouldn't matter which inputs you use, tthe Trim faders for 1-4 are adjustable from Line level to Mic level

The VL version has H/M/L switches on channels 1 and 2 but the rest are fixed at -10dBV.
