Have a few questions about building a new studio!

Hey People!

I have a few specific questions about my the new studio i am building.

1. I am going to have my computer in a seperate room, and I was wondering how I could get long USB's for my sound card, keyboard, mouse, etc. and have no lag or latency. Is there some other wire I could use?

2. I am running my Dual Monitors through 2 VGA cords. If you have 10 feet of a VGA cord, will there be latency / lag?

3. Instead of putting my computer in a seperate room entirely, is there large cases(that your computer would go in, full tower) that are completely sound proof?

My computer is extremely loud. That's the reason why I am trying to put it somewhere where it will shutup:P

And just so you know, I build my own computer and have a good few years of experience put into computers and things.

And the only reason I ask if there is a way to run USB's and VGA's like this is because I know that deadmau5, in his new studio, did. His computer is off to the side of his studio, in another room.

1. Yes, you can buy long wires from computer specialty stores and web sites. Google "keyboard mouse extension cable" or similar.

2. No, video has no latency, but you probably need special cables if they have to run farther than 10 feet.

3. There are computer cases, but good ones cost more than just buying a new computer that's quiet. And they still need their own fan to keep from overheating. My old Dell laptop is dead quiet, and my newer Dell XPS Dimension 8300 tower is quiet enough to record with microphones in the same room.

Since you said you built your own computer, it should be easy to install a newer quiet power supply. This will be vastly easier than having to go into another room every time you want to stick a DVD in the drive.

If I were to get Keyboard & Mouse extensions, would there be latency when moving the mouse / typing. And I thought about getting quieter fans, but that would really ruin the appearance of my computer. Though I don't much care what my computer looks like, others that I know do. A green and black computer would not look very good with blue and yellow fans. I know that I would not at all mind going into another room to pop a CD into the drive(since I don't do it often at all.) The way my studio would be setup is that there is a 5' wide room directly to the left of the main studio, and that is where my computer would be. The studio is going to be pretty small, probably about 10'x15'? Not sure. I'll be finding that out soon.

Electricity travels at the speed of light, so using extension cables will not add delays.

Your questions, concerns about image & priorities suggest that your computer knowledge isn't to fabulous.

As Ethan said:
A quieter fan is #1.
the extensions aren't a problem.

Those with the resources, (not me), have a control room & a tracking/live room which reduce a lot of the issues your talking about.
Having the computer in another room can be great but eventually you will mind having to go into another room to do stuff.
Why would people's attitude to the colour of things influence you?
Perhaps they'll look down on long cable runs that aren't asthetically tied and made safe.
Have you thought through the combination of mic tags, interface and shoe laces in the overall thematic for the room?

Thanks for the reply. First, I'd like to say that no, I would not ever mind going to another room. It would be 5 feet away, and I almost never use CD's. Even if I had to, it wouldn't be a big deal. Second, you have a great point on the color thing. I personally don't care, so I may just switch out the fans. Third, do you think that I didn't think about those cables? My solution: Sneaky Conduit. (look at the photo below the post) Fourth, this isn't going to be some huge recording studio. It's a home recording studio. It won't be very large in size, and it won't have more than 2 channels for me to record. I mainly produce electronic music, and most of the time that doesn't even require vocals. Yes, I will have to record them eventually, but it won't be like recording a full band. Fifth, I do have a rather extensive amount of computer knowledge, and I am pretty darn sure that if you have a 25' USB cable connecting a keyboard to the computer, there will be some sort of latency. Especially with the sound card. No, I won't be using 25' USB cables, most likely just a 10' one(or less.)

The sub floor is a great tool for your space. I wish I had that option - I'd be more likely to put my computer in another room if I had that option.
You really should change the fans: if you're any sort of comp. geek that's a given mod.
My comment on your knowledge is based on the way you phrase things - even now, "...pretty darn sure..." isn't the certainty I'd expect.
Maybe firewire would be a better option for you interface if you're concerned about latency/distance.
Whatever you decide on - be sure to post some music so we can listen & enjoy.

I routinely use a keyboard and mouse to control computers on the opposite side of the globe with no perceptible latency.

There will be absolutely no latency in keyboard or mouse operation by using a longer USB cable - period. You probably won't believe me either, as Ethan already told you this, and your response leads me to believe you didn't accept his explanation :-)

A USB2.0 interface will have issues with a USB extension cable. I tried a 25' one, and the interface connection failed. 11 feet is considered max I think. I have heard that you can boost the signal for longer lengths, but that is just what I have heard. I use a 35' VGA monitor extension for a remote monitor, mouse, and keyboard. No such thing as latency there. Hell, my wireless mouse works that far too.
 
Google "Parts Express" and "MCM Electronics". They are both in Springboro, Ohio and will have any audio/video cable you may need. And they are fantastic on price. I check each store for the same thing, one may be cheaper than the other and vice versa. They are actually located almost next to each other in Springboro. Where else can you get 10' HDMI for $6, 17' for $8.93, or 23' for $11.93 !!! They have any USB length you need. The have a 16.5' USB cable that repeats the signal (increases length you can run) for $9.98 !! I have tons of USB, RCA, XLR's, etc.. that I have got through both places and you just cant beat the quality and service.
