So, what are you working on?

  • Thread starter Thread starter RAMI
  • Start date Start date
Practicing for a Beatles-themed benefit show with 3 friends.
Preparing for a band audition Tuesday night (Beatles tribute band).
Mixing down a tune for the Neil Young Americana contest.
Started tracking for a new original.
Real life keeps getting in the way of my music, too! ;)

Re: #2 above
I'm now the 6th member of a new local Beatles tribute band, Instant Karma!

So Instant Karma's gonna get you would be past tense now?

Drums and bass sound fantastic on bad vibrations. Wait - the guitar sounds great too - good stuff man!
Well, no new amp. But here's the first 2 songs I've started working on with the TASCAM us800.

First tune is just waiting for me to feel like singing. Maybe this week some time.

ALIBI (no vox)

Second one has the theramin I started a thread about a few weeks ago. I think it comes in at about 2:20. Just need vocals on this one too.

BAD VIBRATIONS (no vox)

So are you stu or pete?

He could be Billy Preston - admittedly it's a niche role.

I don't know whether Half Man Half Biscuit ever made it as far as the United States, but there's a lyric of theirs that always makes me laugh:

"I shout all my obscenities from steeples,
But please don't label me a madman,
I'm off to see the Bootleg Beatles,
As the bootleg Mark Chapman"

So are you stu or pete?

I hope he's pete because stu didn't last very long. and pete became a millionaire eventually.

actually the 6th member to join the band was ringo, but nobody wants to be ringo.

Ok, Rami, I gotta ask, how'd you record that bass on bad vibrations?

I want to be Ringo.

There is a very interesting (though obviously low budget) documentary on Pete called 'The Best of the Beatles" on streaming netflix :-)

Yeah that's some badass shit right there FATTTT!

Wow! Cool. I had no idea it was that interesting.

Ok, I use an Ibanez bass with active pick-ups. I record direct in.

My mixng chain for the bass in this song is:

Poulin guitar distortion
ReaEQ
PSP Vintage warmer
Compression

That's more than I usually do to my bass. Usually, it's just EQ and compression. But I wanted some distortion on it. Because of the distortion, I found that also adding the Vintage Warmer brought back some of the low-end, since putting distortion on the bass thins out the low end. I also found it made a big difference putting the distortion before or after everything. It turned out sounding best when I put the distortion first , EQ second, Warmer third, and compressor last.

Cool. I've added distortion before but never really liked it. Maybe it's because of how it affects the low end, or maybe because I add it post EQ...I don't know I can't remember. I'll have to try that.

I wonder how much the active pickups add to the effect. I've only got one bass, and it's got active pickups with a knob to make them passive. I usually record passive because I like the 60s and 70s mellow bass sound. But I think the active sounds really great for songs where the bass needs to be more prominent.

Others should post stuff here. I know it's not the MP3 Clinic, but it would be a cool "un-finished project" thread.

Greg posted this back on page 5 or 6,. Sounds awesome so far.
Here, I'm working on this:

I don't usually post unfinished stuff, but I'm breaking in my new guitar gear and this is where I'm at.

I'm gona be starting into a one song session with Pete Gardiner.
He's recording a song for a wedding and we're starting tonight, so I'll post up the progress if anyone's interested.

Cool thread. :)

Hmmm...I never thought of any of that. I had no idea I can turn a knob to make the bass passive, but I guess that explains why one of the knobs seems to cut the volume in half.

I think how you pick makes a big difference. For this tune, I used one of those big, stiff purple Dunlops and picked HARD!

I don't know how most active basses work. A friend of mine made mine and sold it to me so I have no idea how standard it is. Mine has three knobs, one for the volume of each pickup, then a smaller one that seems to make it more ore less passive/active (I think). But, it also came with a giant pick (we call it "war and peace" because it's about as thick as the book). I don't pick too hard, so that's something to look into.

Thanks for some nice tips.

I'll post a rough (very rough) work in progress later this evening. I agree that it would be fun to hear some stuff as it progresses and in various stages of mixing and recording.

Man, that guitar sounds sweet! An LP into a Marshall is just classic. Drums sound perfect as usual. And that bass sound is killer. I'm super impressed.

You and Rami give me hope! Plus it shows you don't need a ton of gear and a super studio to get great sounds.

I've taken about 5 months off recording to do some open mic stuff, Write some new material and try and be a better musician/songwriter

I've got five songs in the works but I started tracking again last week and this is a snippet of what I am currently working on.
Little boat snippet by Infinite Number of Chimps on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

All just raw tracks with some panning to help me figure out the arrangement and I'm planning on tracking the vox and harmonies next week

Nice! I'm looking forward to the finished arrangement. I always start and stop a song 5 times because I'll change the arrangement and work in new parts.
