Hardware software
I think we all agree that usually the software that comes with the computer is not really up to the task of making a half decent recording. PCi cards are good but once again you are putting them in a noisy environment, many years ago I switched to standalone hardware, M Audio makes a lot of decent stuff for a reasonable price, also with outboard hardware you get more features like handy control of your headphone and other volumes and mixes. Myself I use the new Adobe Audition software and my son uses the Magix software because he deals a lot with samples, they are also a reasonable price.
