my crashes don't sound natural

I have an at 3525, at 4033, and pl20 as my best room/overhead mics. Actually i used the at3525 and a shure 85 condenser as overheads on my last recording. it doesn't sound natural. I use a 2 channel tube pre with no eq(that's not the problem). They just sound washy and not seperated well. I am sure that it is placement but what does someone else think...
 
Time for another silly...

When I saw the title of this thread, I swear I thought, "Great, here's someone who works in the film industry doing sound for airplane disaster movies, and he needs help from us!?"
 
Are you pegging the meters when you hit the crash Cymbal? Analog tape will be a little more forgiving of this distortion. If you are recording digitally a loud transient (Like a crash cymbal) will sound harsh and brittle. Lower the input level and/or move the mike back a bit.

Most likely it's a placement issue. Did you put any EQ'ing on it at all?
Where are the mics placed?

I saw a couple dudes build a bass drum pedal that they could play in their control room while the bass drum itself was some 30 ft away. When i asked why they said so they could eq it better , when I said well there's 2 of you, ya know, one to play , one to eq, they gave me blank stares, the lights were on but no one was home kinda stares...lol.

It was actually pretty cool and played somewhat ok.

Things have changed since 1999, but not that much! If the cymbals sound good and natural in the room then it will probably be a mic placement issue or mic issue.
