I notice that the tascam us 800 has been discontinued and they are getting sold off in america for $99, but still seems like the uk prices havent dropped, would it be worth buying one from the america cos my local guitar shop are asking for £200?

or if i hang off will the prices drop in the uk?

if it were me..and I was set on getting one, I`d strike now if at all posible..
ya never know when it`s gonna just disappear, and no longer be available..

aye thats what i'm thinking, i dunno why uk shops can justify selling it for 200 quid when its selling for $99 in america which is basically £64 in our money.

wow..yeah that`s a HUGE difference!!

it seams that almost everyone here in the USA has them listed for $99..except this place..which is clearly behind the times...sad thing is..someone is not going to know, and probley buy one from them..

I heard the same thing happened in other than US, when the US-1641 was discontinued. In fact, the price went up again in US when the demand was high for the last units. Funny though, because the replacement/upgraded version (US-1800) ended up the same as the last sale price of the 1641 after it was discontinued. I would take advantage of the US price now.

just ordered 1 off Ebay hoping for the best as I wait for it to arrive, after reading post there is some good and some not good reviews but I am optimistic about this little device. Will be testing it on Linux as well as Audacity both Linux and MS.

Please let us know how it works for you jw. There have been so many conflicting reviews lately, that I am confused myself. We can all benefit from personal experience with different OS's running the US 800.

UPS tracking says it should arrive Thursday, I shall hook it up and test it out. And yes I sure will be happy to share my findings.

Just got new Tascam US-800 and as I started out i decided to video taped the process as I opened the box and installed it to a Dell using XP SP3 and the install was FLAWLESS! So much for all the scary stories this is cool!

I am now reading HOW the channels are tracked and I want to know HOW these are coming in VIA the USB not just that it works.

USB is the connection between the Analog inputs of the 800, conversion to digital within the unit, delivered in digital form, to whatever DAW you use on your computer. The connection also sends back to the 800, digital signal, out from the computer, which is then converted to analog in the Tascam, then to the outputs on the unit.

Thank you., I understand how USB works, what I meant to say was I wanted to how how this tascam software interaction worked. For example you open MIXER and at the top you can split the signal (such as MIC 1) Pan LEft OR Pan Right THEN at the bottom there is letter L you click that and you can link BOTH sliders together so when you move 1 other goes up/down too, that also disengages the previous selection so you end up with choice of a LEFT or RIGHT pan of MIC 1 or MIC 2...not sure what that is for?

And yes USB locked up more than once..ya know I have external DVD burner does same thing..it is more of a pain than anything, read about this USB issue and YES you have to unplug and hope windows see it again otherwise it's "reboot". This is why I am hoping LINUX will work with this US-800.

When everything is working it's not bad, I am using a demo of REAPER right now and a free one called Kristal . I used both today to see how well the signals came in and learning all the tiny recording software gadgets. Man I need a bigger screen! I did some test with simultaneous 4 track recording and and it does work. Also I am learning REAPER this is loaded with INFO and way more than I need for my purposes but its the best one of all the many I have seen "so far" . By the way I installed Cubebase and after about 4-5 attempts messing with it my view is that it is total crap (IMHO) and could not get it registered online ..total pain in the butt!

I tried Audacity it works great (2 track only so far) and not sure how you can get it that to record 6 or more tracks at once...but it did work none the less with this Tascam US-800. I have some videos coming soon too :listeningmusic:

If you unplug it, then plug it back in, and windows does`nt "see it" as ya say...try this..

RIGHT click on the "Sounds and Audio device" icon on the bottom right..seen here..
tuss12.webp

then select "ADJUST AUDIO PROPERTIES"..

when the "Sounds and Aduio devices" window pops up, click on "VOICE"...
Next....
where it says "voice recording".click on the drop down scroll, and select US-800..

seen here
tussuspic.webp

next..and lastly...
in the same "sounds and audio device" window, click on the "AUDIO" tab..
and then click on the drop dwn scroll under "sound recording" and again, select "US-800"..

Seen here...

you may not have to change the "Voice" one, but while I`m n there, i do it anyway..
this should take care of having to reboot your comp..
so just unplug the unit, then plug it bck in..then, if need be, just click the "sounds and Audio device" icon, and go from there..only takes a few seconds..

Hey I sure will try that thank you!
..interesting what your mentioning because I have 2 PC's and only one is dedicated to audio recording nothing else. It has just been given a fresh install of XP but only upgraded to SP2 update then I stopped it from going to SP3. That one was already setup the way your instructions detailed and what is cool is that THIS is also the only PC that is NOT giving me any troubles. So you might have some very good tips and I really appreciate you working with me on that. I like this Tacsam allot really want to make this all work out ya know? :o

have not installed cubebase LE5 yet...not sure I want to? Tested that REAPER and 'WOW" that is awesome!

thats cool..and no problem man..
if you don`t have that icon in your task bar, you should be able to find it by going into the control pannel, then just left click it, and check the box seen here..
tuscan1234.webp

or...you can right click it in the control panel, then select "create shortcut"...once you click "Create shortcut"..it`s going to say "windows cannot creat a short cut here, do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desk top instead"...go ahead and click that if you want, as it`ll just put the same icon, with the same options etc on your desk top...

that`s what i ended up doung, even though typically my icon stays in my task bar, I got soo much stuff going on, and steady getting plugged in and unplugged etc, other then just my US-800..that oddley enough, sometimes my task bar icon goes missing..LOL...it happens when another program I sometimes run (not related to my US-800), basically takes place of it..but this may not be relivant for you, but just thought I`d mention it, incase your ever goes missing from the task bar..LOL

So far so good...now I shall set this PC in i'ts spot and give it the work out.

Nice! When do we get video? :D

Hey I have it just not time to dump it to PC (its on a HI8 video) I will convert that ASAP and send off DAY 1.

Yep I wanted to get out as much INFO to the web because I could sense this Tascam US-800 was going to need all hands on deck. So far the clean install on a separate PC not loaded with toys and using only 2 USB devices (key and mouse) has been best "no errors" unit using the US-800.

But we shall see right? I had to be sound man for Church at 7Pm so was using cam for that PLUS it was really busy so I am tired after a long day of visiting. With that said I am still VERY excited about working with this and learning "yup learning" more on how to multitrack record. There is always room for me to learn it never stops. I have a 16 channel analog mixer Yamaha Mx200 16 and have some XLR MICs and now I have this Tascam..so things are getting built up (got the mixer free!) Along with making some homemade sound absorbing panels and painting I think my little shop will be a blast to play and record in..I play fiddle/mandolin and guitar (30 years) so all I need is to get my fellow musican friends over and can test out my setup...good way to learn eh?

Will be back soon..more Christmas family stuff yet to come so time is being juggled..whew!!

I got mine in yesterday and installed it today with no problems, i then installed cubase it was all working great as far as i could tell with me being a complete novice, i managed to record some guitar on one track then vocals on another, i then switched it off for xmas dinner and now i cant get it working, first of all i couldnt get it to reconize i then rebooted and the icon came up but when i clicked on it nothings happening in the mixer or the output. do you think i need to reinstall it?

i've not really got a clue what i'm doing as this is my first interface

Managed to get it working again, My only other problem is i can only get sound out the left side of the earphones any help on getting the sound out both ears would be very much appreciated?

once i've recorded a track and playing it back i get sound out both ears but when recording the guitar only through the left ear.
