So I just got my Pro 40 today and I have a quick question. This being my first FireWire interface, I'm trying to be very aware of accidental hot swapping. I understand the computer must be shut off before plugging or unplugging the FireWire cable, but does the Pro 40 need to be turned off when I unplug the FireWire cable? Can I turn off the Pro 40 without turning off the computer? What about sleeping the computer? Will sleeping cause problems? (I'm on a Snow Leopard Mac, BTW.)

Thanks for the help, I just want to make sure I don't damage any of my equipment.

An important correction for you: Your computer does NOT need to be shut off before plugging or unplugging a Firewire cable. (fyi, I use a Saffire Pro 24)

Almost every day, I fire up my Saffire, plug in the Firewire cable to my laptop (already open and running), plug in my headphones, and mess around in Garageband. Never any issues.

Sometimes I output to my amp (if I'm alone in my house) but really, no worries!

Okay, thanks!

I got a '40... love it :), and so am pretty careful about hot swapping, cos like you I read it's better to do it in that order.... but I am pleased to hear that hertzdonut hasn't had any problems...

Yes. I think I heard it has to do with the type of FireWire jack in the interface that determines whether the interface is hot swappable or not. Maybe the Pro 24 has a different FireWire chip than the Pro 40...

or the hardware... maybe macbook's are different to iMac's to macbook pro's ? I dunno

Firewire, by design, is hot-pluggable. (Technically, not hot-swappable. For instance, you should not unplug a Firewire-connected external hard drive without ejecting it first. Your Saffire can be because it does not depend upon the computer system resources.) Anyway, whether it is a Macbook, Macbook Pro, iMac, etc., it's essentially the same. The Saffire can be unplugged and re-plugged in and your Mac and your Saffire will stay happy. (I'm not a Windows guy, so I can't speak for that connection)

You are certainly being more than safe, but if you ever forget, then you can rest easy knowing you won't have done any damage.
