hey, im mainly new here but i was wondering what would i need to build a decent recording studio at home. im on a budget of $500-$700 so nothing too fancy. ive had a Pro Tools USB Mic for about 5 months now and im not satisfied with the quality and wanted something a bit better.

can anyone give me like a list of equipment i should get and maybe some recommendations.

thanks

Read all the threads in the newbie section of these forums that ask exactly the same question.

I was where you are now 18 months ago and I can tell you it aint easy! The first thing is to decide what you want to do and why you're doing it. What do you want to record? Are you going to import backing tracks and overlay solos? Do you want a drum track? Are you going to do the whole thing yourself? What are you aiming for? Are you doing it just for fun - nothing wrong with that - or are you aiming for a demo CD to 'sell' your music to others? All these questions have a significant bearing on how you go about it and more importantly how much you spend.

So if you could list your aims and objectives, it might give folks a better idea what to reccomend for you.

Good Luck !!!

depends on how many inputs and what sorts of instruments you'll be recording. these are my general recommendations, so you may or may not need all of this/

DAW - Reaper $40
SDC pair - there are some threads in the microphone section about small diaphragm condensors for OH and acoustic guitars. $200
LDC (1) - MXL v67g is pretty popular for $80. Good for acoustic guitars, vocals, rooms.
SM57 (2) - for electric guitar cabs, some vocals, and snare $150.
Interface - maudio fasttrack pro (4 inputs I think, two built in pres) $160
Extra pres to complete all 4 inputs - DMP3 $150
Monitors!!! - some 5" studio monitors for around $300.
Total - $1080

This will cover pretty much everything you'll need to start, gives you 4 simultaneous inputs, but it's a little more than your budget. You can pick and choose what you want from the list to keep the budget right.

How about you give us a list of what you're trying to do... it will make it easier, but aaron's list is on the money... literally..
