So says David Renzer, chairman & CEO of Universal Music Group Publishing, who shared the stat at a recent publishing forum (we just got our hands on the recording). "For every 250,000 streams on YouTube, that is the equivalent of one credit of ASCAP performing rights value," Renzer relayed. "One credit is less than $8, it's about $7.60." The forum was held by the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Renzer aptly described the ratio as "depressing," though he also noted that YouTube has secured proper licenses with performance rights organizations. "You do that math and it's pretty depressing, but that's the world we live in today, and it's causing a lot of consternation and a lot of discussion amongst the industry," Renzer relayed.

Part of the problem, according to Rezner, is that the PROs are required to license services under various consent decrees - not from scratch like the recording side. There are negotiations, interim rates and court proceedings, but ultimately "it's not a lot of money" according to Renzer.

Simply stated, publishers are just making a lot less from streaming formats. Beyond YouTube, streaming payouts are paltry for publishers, and recent filings from Pandora prove the point. But the irony of the discussion is that master recording owners get nothing from traditional radio - at least in the US - all part of a very imbalanced and byzantine royalty world.

To the OP - I can sense your sincerity, no matter what these losers say. You seem to be open to learning new things to help your career, so I will share a rare gem of information with you:

If you kill yourself, your YouTube views are likely to double within two weeks. Just remember to add a couple of tags to your video before you kill yourself...things like "wigger" and "suicide" and "hopeless tool chokes to death during masturbation."

Just remember that while killing yourself may seem extreme, nobody ever got famous by playing it safe. Good luck with your career.

At least 1 million of those views were people clicking on the link, saying "this sucks" and turning it off. This isn't a reflection on your music, I haven't listened to it. this is a fact. Not every person who clicks on your you tube link is going to like what they see. You haven't told us how many people clicked 'like' and how many clicked 'dislike'. Is there a reason for that? In any case, 70% of the populatation of the world are fucking idiots, I mean...look at what's in the charts these days. So popularity really doesn't count for crap these days.

Maybe this isn't for me to comment on, but what percentage of the revenue generated from the music you sell goes to charity? Do you even sell music? If so and it's any less than 100%, then you have some way to go before you even come close to being able to criticize that guy.

Lol. I didn't even see this before. Classic reactionary meltdown. It's good that you hate my music. It's not for stupid wiggers. It uses real instruments and requires musical ability. You hating it tells me that I'm on the right track. Thanks for checking it out, vanilla. :)
