Lester is my favorite singer. Jimmy Martin is my other favorite.

Wow... Really glad this thread was dug up. Amazing personality to these recordings. They took me back to a time before I was born. Thanks for sharing, Mr. Gerst.

It was my privilege to capture these live performances of these legendary musicians. I wish I had done more.

Chambers Brothers? I assume that this was well before they became the pop-psych-rock-soul (I invented a new category) band that became famous? It would be interesting to hear some of that stuff. I'm doing some work with Billy Mure, a former NY studio guitar player. He's now 95 years old (still active) and always pulling demos out of his "files" that I find rather amazing.

Great stuff. Thanks for posting. Who would have thunk that they would go from that to "The Time Has Come Today"?

MANY years ago I did a location recording at the St. Paul Civic Center in St. Paul, Mn. The performer was Edwin Hawkins and lead singer and rhythm section. The Edwin Hawkins Singers were replaced by approx 500 voices gathered from the black churches of the Twin Cities. The audience of about 1200 were mostly members of those same churches, but might just as wwll have been on stage with the rest of the singers. I had a GREAT time at the show and still pull out Oh Happy Day to listen to it once in a while. It wasn't the greatest recording, but it brings back fond memories.

It was an amazing time for me, being exposed to so many different styles of music and getting to sit down with all these legends, talking to them, having them show me licks, and just getting to really know them.

Here's another track from that same time period:

This one's from 50 years ago? Sounds older.

I saw them do this up in Squamish BC and when they were chanting 'Time!' the echo off the cliffs caught their attention and charmed both them and the audience. It was getting ready to rain and we had our eye on the sky.

I have two complete Lightnin' Hopkins shows, so yes, I have enough to do a full length CD.

Here's one more; this time, it's Rambling Jack Elliot doing Cocaine Blues:

Drug songs. Or maybe it's nookey he's singing about really. I mean, he keeps saying baby come over here.

nookie:

1 sex (from 'nook' or 'shady nook')

2 Dutch? to fuck

3 local vernacular for 'pelt'

4 all of the above

Nope. The song's about dope. He's way into hashish by the last verse. So much for the power of love.

Just a Little More Faith - very, very cool.
Thanks for being there Harvey!
I have a live performance Time on VHS somewhere in the house.
