Way too much effects on it in the intro, for sure... Scratch that- do away with the first 10 seconds' guitar solo intro altogether. Distracting and amaturish. As much as I love tremolo, and I even like reverb, there is WAY too much of both in that first ten seconds. If you start the first set with that song, as-is, you will have EVERYBODY headed for the pool, the kitchen, etc.- whereever they can go to get away from the band- it won't matter if the rest of the set is wonderful- you will have lost them. Not saying you aren't good, just that is about the goofiest 10 seconds I have heard in years. The Doors' understated, jazzy cymbals intro just works for this song- go with that.

I thought I was going to hate this... but you can do my BBQ anytime :) And a fantastic live vibe. I like the freeform lead bit around 2:40 where the Doors kinda meets the Ventures. Kudos to all involved.

I could totally eat a hamburger, corn, potato salad, turkey leg, baked beans, hot dog, chips, dip, and drink beer to this!

If this was recorded live, in a jam-type scenario, then this thing is quite well done, considering. If this were tracked in a studio, I'd say the whole thing has a very hollow sound too it, like a mic was hung from the ceiling and recorded each piece. Performance was great, but the recording definitely could use some work.

Not too shabby sir. I was in a band back in the 70's that covered this one. You hit all the high spots. Yeah, kind of minimal on the recording side but you nailed the best part of the vibe.

I agree with jason...it sounds like it was recorded live in a jam..Im sure it was though...

I dont like the doors but I think this is a solid version..and better for not having keys which is strange as thats what I play generally...in fact you could do a great joy division type version of this lol

Id like it to be a little bit cleaner recorded but you could make it just sound like shit by making it sound produced...this way its much more MC5/Stooges :)

great performance and thanks for sharing

Sounds good Queepy! What's this BBQ circuit you speak of?
Thanks Idol! 1st gig scheduled for Ethel &Earls Pig Roast extravaganza....from there we hope to hit the Union City Carp Rodeo, Toms Divorce bash, and various other big time gigs ;>)

Dude, I'm all over the goofiest 10 seconds you heard in years :>) I do get your point about amaturish and lame...I have a hard time avoiding that in my playing.....this recording is from the 1st night we really tried it, and basically going off of memory having heard the tune so many times...after reading your post I had to go check the actuall recording , and it als has a kinda goofy intro, this is intro from the remastered LA Woman album:

I like your idea of the quiet understated intro a lot....the bad thing is the other 2 guys have now heard this intro I just posted above, and want me to try and do that weird ..."My Country Tis a Thee " type thing....will definetly try and knock that reverb down on the patch I used , created on the fly on my Pod HD500....Thanks for listening and the feedback!

Hey thanks Tobe! Were just 3 weekend warriors playing the music we dig ! Yeah, I was really faking my way thru that part(the keyboard solo of the real song) ...glad ya dug it!

Dogmatic:I could totally eat a hamburger, corn, potato salad, turkey leg, baked beans, hot dog, chips, dip, and drink beer to this!

Man, now I'm hungry!! :>).....thanks for listening, glad ya dug it!

Wow, good call PoeticIntensity...thats exactly how it was recorded...1 stereo mic hung from the ceiling out in the center of the room...about 15ft in front of us...into minidisc walkman recorder...record our practices this way to critiuqe after the fact....Just like sharing em here sometimes as the feedback is really helpful....Thanks for listening!

Cool man, yeah its a lot of fun to play with some interesting dynamics/mood changes....just need to tighten er' up a bit! Thanks for checking it out!

Oh yeah.. a Joy Division type vibe would be way cool on this tune...hmmnn good idea for one of my next solo recording things!....I too really dig the live raw stooges/Iggy vibe so its cool your getting that a bit from this...thanks man!

I didn't say "lame," I said "Distracting and amaturish," not trying to rag on you. Just the intro, with it's over-the-top reverb and tremolo. A spooky, atmospheric (or whatever you intended) lead guitar into is much harder to communicate to others than how it sounds to you. I would just go low-key for the intro of that song.

Y'know, for a stereo-pair recording, this is totally listenable. It displays the band well, and the balances are surprisingly good, meaning they were good in the room, which is hard to do unless everyone's on the same page and has their ego's in check. Nice work!

Sounds good for a live jam. I like the wanky wierdo intro. I hate this song though. If you play my barbecue, leave this song out of your set. :D

Sopunds good sans keys!
2nd run through rehearsal recording - great for that! I've heard professional live recordings that were much worse - in fact I've bought a few - always hoping!!!

Yeah, no thing man.... I didn't feel like you were ragging on me at all....I tend to use "lame" quite often....and thought your description on everybody leaving to get away from the band was pretty funny..I did try the intro at last nights practice without the tremalo/reverb ...still a little loud I think....but the other guys won't start the song until I make some kinda slide guitar type noise...
Here is last nights take :

Thanks man...thats whats really cool about the guys I jam with...no egos at all...just having fun!

Lol...thanks Greg! Yeah...I wanted to totally try and change the whole arrangement into some kinda speed punk type vibe, like a cross between the doors version and Purples Highway Star or something ...I don't know if we could ever play a BBQ in Tejas without knowing the entire ZZ Top catalog! ;>)
