... would you take the smaller but symmetrical room over the larger but asymmetrical room, or vice versa?

symmetrical rooms are not good..makes it easy for waves to come directly back and cause phasing, even frequency build-up.
always better to go with something that direct the waves away from crossing.

Good to know, my spare bedroom/studio-ish space is totally asymmetric, my upstairs has all the bedroom and bathroom doors built on the diagonal to maximize space. Looks cool too, but leaves only 2 walls parallel. The closet doors are paneled, so that breaks up the surface.

Now here in Utah they use a wall texturing treatment frequently where they cover the wall and ceiling in drywall mud and drag it. Mud is porous and eats bass, so the whole wall's a bass trap, but it echoes, produces a high pitched ring-like echo. I may have found a real argument in favor of acoustic foam.

We're talking for recording purposes right?

Bigger / assymetric wins..

If we're talking, say a combo torture/S&M dungeon then ya can't see your reflections in the mirrors as easily if the walls aren't square... and smaller is better because it's easier to clean the blood off the floor... :D

I went with the small room because of livability rather than acoustical considerations.

The air doesn't move at all in this room. It even sucks with a box fan. I've slept in this room before, and it wasn't pleasant.

The other room (my bedroom) is adjacent to another person's bedroom. This room is adjacent to my bedroom and across the hall from the bathroom. I'm not as likely to disturb anyone with my racket in here.

So....um.....why did you bother......ah, never mind...

I hadn't thought it through when I posted this. I was too excited about having a whole room to use as a studio then. :laughings:
