First of all I wouldn't even classify what I'm proposing as a recording studio and appologise for not knowing anything about the basics.
but anyways
I have been using a USB mic ( Samson CO1U ) for the past couple of months and have figured it was time for an 'upgrade'
I'm not a producer and i'm just looking for equipment to record my vocals onto a track/beat/instrumental
I had a look at thomann.de, just to see the if my budget was sustancial, and came across this bundle ---( www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=ie/the_tbone_sc600_bundle.htm )---
I know I'll need phantom power to power up the mic and a computer obviously but what I'm puzzeled about is whether to get an Audio Interface or PreAmp? Or do I need both ( to be honest I'm not sure how they differ )
Sorry for my lack of knowledge but i've just been so used to the simple USB method
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Why exactly do I need to start from scratch
Also is the bundle I'm considering any good?

NOTE * for link to work add the (.htm)
I'm not sure why this is the case
Thanks in advance
Jude,

Hi there,

Wow, this is a seriously large and open ended question!

Start by nailing down what you want and need first. ie What's wrong with your current usb mic ? Does it not do everything you need it to?

If you gave your USB mic to some of the guys around here, (although they'd hate it) they'd probably get a decent result (by home recording standards).

Spend a few days / weeks just readin the newbie forum and you will pick up a heap of general info - just reading. Don't be embarrased to be a newbie and don't be afraid to ask any questions - any member here flaming a newbie post is just a small person making themselves feel big! If you do this you'll also gain a bit of cred for it, having done some research. I find that whatever question you have to ask in the early stages of home recording has already been asked and answered in this forum here.

YUou could start by looking into your "Audio Interface or PreAmp? "

Hope this helps.

cheers,
FM

You''l be right as rain in no time.

Nothing is wrong I've just been told to get an audio interface to get better quality so thats what i've been planning on doing

And thanks for the directions I'll have a look now
I just thought the newbie section was for those who hadn't a breeze even about recording
But that's like the pot calling the kettle black huh? :)

Jude,

This thread should be in the Newbies section and so I moved it there.

You should read up some here in the Newbies section. Lots of information from others just like you looking to start out.

Welcome to the site and have fun,

From what I've seen getting into things most interfaces have mic preamps in them. Great place to start, can you convert a usb mic for use with an interface? With an interface you can use just about anything to record on the computer, condensers, dynamics, instruments, sky's the limit.

A few ways I've found to save some dough, look for discontinued items, a lot of the time the replacement item is minimally different than the older unit. Clearance items can be a great bargain as a result. I's also say you're better off getting one or two decent things than a ton of junk.
