I'm running Logic pro 9 via a Tascam 1641 and am having monitoring problems.
Unless i slide the output slider to -8 or -9 there is huge clipping.

I know it has to be something totally obvious that i am overlooking but can't seem to see it.

Couple more questions. What monitors are you using and are they connected to the monitor outs of the 1641? Are you direct monitoring or is it playback that is distorting?

Is it a new problem or have you always had the problem when trying to listen through you monitors?

If you used to monitor through headphones, you might have had the headphones turned down unknowingly.

What are the levels in your DAW saying? If they are going into the red you'll have clipping no matter how you listen.

It's been a problem since i bought the 1641. through headphones AND monitors. but when i mix sans the 1641,just plugging headphones into mac its fine.

I also have a presonus hp4 headphone amp but i don't know if that is causing the problem or not

Try to isolate the problem by trying a few different setups: first just plug straight into Mac, then go through the interface, then go Mac>headphone amp. See if that changes the distortion at all. Try adjusting the volume on all of these components as well.

I vaguely remeber someone else having the same problem with a 1641. Not sure if it was this forum or not.

Anyway, the fix was a firmware update and I just looked at the Tascam site and they have firmware updates. May be worth checking if you have the latest version.

I have tried this. When i go thru the interface is when i have the problems.

Can you explain your signal path through the interface and what all the volumes (includng software volumes) are set to?
